Baseball at the 1991 Pan American Games was contested between teams representing Aruba, Canada, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Netherlands Antilles, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, and the United States. The 1991 edition was the 11th Pan American Games, and was hosted by Havana. Cuba entered the competition as the five-time defending champions, having won each gold medal dating back to 1971. They successfully defended their title, with Puerto Rico finishing second. Lourdes Gourriel
Lourdes Gurriel Delgado (born 25 March 1957) is a Cuban baseball player and Olympic gold medalist. Playing career Gourriel played in the Cuban National Series. He won the Cuban National Series Rookie of the Year Award during the 1976-77 Cuban National Series for Azucareros. In 1978–1979, he hit 12 doubles to tie Armando Capiró and Jorge Beltrán for the Serie Nacional lead. He debuted with the Cuba national baseball team that year, hitting .294 in the 1979 Intercontinental Cup. Gourriel led the 1979–1980 Serie Nacional with 77 hits. In the 1980 Amateur World Series, he hit .452 to help Cuba to the gold medal and got the game-winning hit in one 5-4 game versus Team USA. He hit .297 in the 1981 Intercontinental Cup. Armando Ríos (born September 13, 1971) is a left-handed outfielder who played in Major League Baseball from 1998 through 2003. Career Rios played center field for Louisiana State University from 1991 to 1993. Armando Ríos first reached the majors in 1998 with the San Francisco Giants, spending part of four seasons with them before moving to the Pittsburgh Pirates (2001–02) and Chicago White Sox (2003). His most productive season came in 2001, when he hit .260 in 95 games and posted career-highs in home runs (14), RBI (50), runs (38), hits (83) and doubles (17). Euclides Rojas (born August 25, 1967) is a Cuban-born coach and player development official in Major League Baseball. He was most recently the bullpen coach of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Career Rojas was a right-handed relief pitcher in his playing days. He was the Cuban National Team's all-time leader in saves before he and 12 others left their homeland by raft in 1994, were rescued by the United States Coast Guard, and eventually emigrated to the United States. Rojas played independent league baseball in 1995 before being acquired by the Florida Marlins in his adopted city of Miami. Orestes Kindelán Olivares (born November 1, 1964) is the most prolific home run hitter in the history of post-revolutionary Cuban baseball, known as "El Cañon de Dos Rios" and one of the offensive stars of the Cuba national baseball team, which won numerous World Cups and two Olympic gold medals during his tenure.
