Bascantis
''Bascantis'' is a genus of moths belonging to the family Tineidae. It contains only one species, ''Bascantis sirenica'', that is endemic to New Zealand. This species is classified as "Data Deficient" by the Department of Conservation. Taxonomy This species was described by Edward Meyrick in 1914 using a specimen collected by George Hudson at Kaeo in January. Hudson discussed and illustrated this species both in his 1928 book ''The Butterflies and Moths of New Zealand'' as well as his 1950 publication ''Fragments of New Zealand entomology''. The holotype specimen is held at the Natural History Museum, London. Description Meyrick described the species as follows: Distribution This species is endemic to New Zealand. Along with the type locality of Kaeo, this species has also been collected in Waitākere Ranges, Days Bay, and Wainuiomata. It was last seen in 1950. Waitākere Ranges
The Waitākere Ranges is a mountain range in New Zealand. Located in West Auckland between metropolitan Auckland and the Tasman Sea, the ranges and its foothills and coasts comprise some of public and private land. The area, traditionally known to Māori as ''Te Wao Nui o Tiriwa'' (The Great Forest of Tiriwa), is of local, regional, and national significance. The Waitākere Ranges includes a chain of hills in the Auckland Region, generally running approximately from north to south, 25 km west of central Auckland. The ranges are part of the Waitākere Ranges Regional Park. The New Zealand Threat Classification System is used by the Department of Conservation to assess conservation priorities of species in New Zealand. ''Zorion guttigerum,'' commonly known as the flower long-horn beetle, is an endemic species of beetle in New Zealand. It is found on the flowers of many plant species and feeds on nectar and pollen. Taxonomy ''Zorion guttigerum'' was first described as ''Obrium guttigerum'' by John Westwood in 1945, before it received the ''Zorion'' genus synonym. Wainuiomata () is a large suburb of Lower Hutt, in the Wellington Region of New Zealand's North Island. Origin of name The word 'Wainui-o-mata' is a Māori name made up of the words Wai = water, Nui = big, O = of, and Mata – which could refer to a woman's name. The origins of the word are disputed, but one commonly accepted translation refers to the women who came over the Wainuiomata Hill to evade marauding tribes from the north, and who sat wailing by the stream after the slaughter of their menfolk. Days Bay
Days Bay is a residential area in Lower Hutt in the Wellington Region of the North Island of New Zealand. It is walled on three sides by steep bush-clad slopes. Most of its level land is occupied by Williams Park and an independent boys' primary school, originally a part of Williams Park. Wellington shipowner, J H Williams, bought land in Days Bay near the end of the 19th century to create custom for his smaller vessels, building a wharf and turning the bay into a sports and resort development for day-trippers and holiday-makers. Edward Meyrick
Edward Meyrick (25 November 1854, in Ramsbury – 31 March 1938, at Thornhanger, Marlborough) was an English schoolmaster and amateur entomologist. He was an expert on microlepidoptera and some consider him one of the founders of modern microlepidoptera systematics. Life and work Edward Meyrick came from a Welsh clerical family and was born in Ramsbury on the Kennet to a namesake father. He was educated at Marlborough College and Trinity College, Cambridge. He actively pursued his hobby during his schooling, and one colleague stated in 1872 that Meyrick "has not left a lamp, a paling, or a tree unexamined in which a moth could possibly, at any stage of its existence, lie hid."
