Barøya is an uninhabited island in Narvik Municipality in Nordland county, Norway. The island is located in the Ofotfjorden near the entrance to the Efjorden. The village of Lødingen lies north of the island. Barøy Lighthouse is located on the northwestern part of the island. The highest point on the island is the tall mountain Sørfjellet. Barøy Lighthouse
Barøy Lighthouse ( no, Barøy fyr) is a coastal lighthouse in Narvik Municipality in Nordland county, Norway. The lighthouse is located on the northwestern shore of the island of Barøya. It marks the entrance to the Ofotfjorden, which leads to the inland port of the town of Narvik. History The first lighthouse here was built in 1903 and it began its work on 1 October 1903. The light was mounted on a concrete base and attached to the west end of a 1-story wooden lighthouse keeper's house. In 1980, the lighthouse building was closed and a new automated light was built about northeast of the old light. The tall light sits at an elevation of above sea level. The occulting light on top flashes red, white, or green depending on the direction from which it is viewed. The 55,800-candela light can be seen for up to . The light tower is white with a red top. Ballangen
Ballangen ( sme, Bálák) is a former municipality in Nordland county, Norway. The municipality existed from 1925 until its dissolution in 2020. The municipality was part of the traditional district of Ofoten. The administrative centre of the municipality was the village of Ballangen. Other villages in the municipality included Bjørkåsen, Kjeldebotn, Kobbvika, and Skarstad. The municipality bordered Narvik Municipality to the east and Tysfjord Municipality to the south, and had a short border with Sweden to the southeast. Ballangen was situated on the southern shore of Ofotfjorden. Ballangen also included the long and narrow Efjorden, just south of the much larger Ofotfjorden. Its immediate surroundings were dominated by fjords, mountains, and forests. Ballangen relied on the nearby town of Narvik as its economic base. Ofotfjorden
Ofotfjord ( or ) is a fjord in Nordland county, Norway. It is an inlet of the Norwegian Sea, located about north of the Arctic Circle. The long Ofotfjord is Norway's 12th longest fjord and it is also the 18th deepest, with a maximum depth of . In the English language and in many historical documents, this fjord is often referred to as the ''Narvik Fjord'' because the town of Narvik is located on the inner shores of the fjord, but this is not an official name of the fjord. The fjord is surrounded by mountains, some reaching , and even in Skjomen, where the ''Frostisen'' glacier can be seen. Lødingen is the administrative centre of Lødingen Municipality in Nordland county, Norway. The village is located on the southwestern shore of the island of Hinnøya. The village is also located where the southern mouth of the Tjeldsundet strait meets the Vestfjorden. The Norwegian National Road 85 runs through the village and continues on the Bognes–Lødingen ferry route. The village is the business and transportation centre for the municipality. Kunnskapsforlaget () is a Norwegian publishing company based in Oslo. Kunnskapsforlaget was established in 1975, as a partnership between H. Aschehoug & Co. (W. Nygaard) and Gyldendal Norsk Forlag.
