Barton River (Vermont)
The Barton River is a tributary of Lake Memphremagog, over long, in northern Vermont in the United States. It runs north from Glover through Barton, Brownington, Coventry and drains through Newport into Lake Memphremagog's South Bay. Course The Barton River arises from the fountains of the former Runaway Pond in Glover. The stretch of river from Vermont Route 16 north of Glover village to Lake Memphremagog is long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I-III section. Roaring Brook runs from Parker Pond in West Glover to the river in southern Barton near Route 16. One of the head branches is the drain from Crystal Lake in the village of Barton. After leaving Barton village, U.S. Route 5, Interstate 91 and the railroad all follow the course of the Barton River valley north to Newport. Interstate 91 (I-91) is an Interstate Highway in the New England region of the United States. It provides the primary north–south thoroughfare in the western part of the region. The Interstate generally follows the course of the Connecticut River. Its southern terminus is in New Haven, Connecticut, at I-95. Orleans, Vermont
Orleans is a village in the northwestern corner of Barton, Orleans County, Vermont, United States. With a population of 788 at the 2020 census, it is the largest village in the county. History Roger Enos purchased land in 1820 in the area from Ira Allen. He had been given a land grant as a veteran in lieu of pay after the Revolutionary War; he may also have purchased this parcel from Herman Allen. It was named "Barton Landing"; this was the first place where craft could be safely loaded for transportation down the Barton River to Lake Memphremagog. It was at the confluence of the Willoughby and Barton rivers, providing sufficient water for flotation. Native Americans had used this landing for years before the pioneers. Enos built the first building, a sawmill, at the confluence. Albany is a town in Orleans County, Vermont, United States. The population was 976 at the 2020 census. Albany contains four villages: the incorporated village of Albany, and the unincorporated villages of Albany Center, East Albany and South Albany. History The original land grant was given to Col. Sheffield is a town in Caledonia County, Vermont, United States. The population was 682 at the 2020 census. Geography Sheffield is located in northwestern Caledonia County. It is bordered by the town of Barton to the north, Sutton to the east, Wheelock to the south, and Glover to the west. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which is land and , or 0.79%, is water. The town is crossed by Interstate 91, leading north to Newport and south to St. Johnsbury. There are no exits within the town. Westmore, Vermont
Westmore is a town in Orleans County, Vermont, United States. The population was 357 at the 2020 census, making it the least populated and least densely populated town in the county. The town contains one unincorporated village clustered around Lake Willoughby. History Originally named Westford, the town was chartered on August 17, 1781. Since Chittenden County had a town named Westford, in 1787 the name was changed to Westmore. The first vacation house was built on the lake in 1860. It is known as the Cheney House, named after an owner in the late 19th century. Westmore never attracted many settlers. The town's peak population was in the census year of 1880 with 485 people. Irasburg, Vermont
Irasburg is a town in Orleans County, Vermont, United States. Irasburg was established in 1781 when the land was granted to Ira Allen, Roger Enos, Jerusha Enos (wife of Roger Enos), Jerusha Enos, Jr. (wife of Ira Allen), Roger Enos, Jr. and others by the Vermont General Assembly.
