Bartholomew Walsh
Bartholomew Walsh (1890 – 13 December 1959) was a Welsh trade unionist. Born in Ferndale in the Rhondda, Walsh began working at a colliery as his father had before him. He joined the South Wales Miners' Federation (SWMF) in 1904. In 1929, he was promoted to a more senior role at his workplace, and so left the SWMF, joining the National Association of Colliery Overmen, Deputies and Shotfirers (NACODS).''Annual Report of the 1960 Trades Union Congress'', p.316 Walsh was soon elected to the national executive of NACODS, and in the 1940s became its first full-time general secretary. He worked hard to improve mine safety whilst in post. Joseph Crawford (trade Unionist)
Joseph Crawford, (2 April 1910''1939 England and Wales Register'' – August 1997) was a British trade unionist. Crawford was born in New Kyo, Annfield Plain in County Durham,''1911 England Census'' where he attended the local school, then began working as a coal miner at the age of fourteen. He married Hannah Jane Horswill on 3 June 1933. They had three children Trevor, Jean and Pauline. At the age of 29, he was promoted to become a deputy, and joined the National Association of Colliery Overmen, Deputies and Shotfirers (NACODS). He became increasingly active in the union, as secretary of his local branch, then as general secretary of its Durham area and a member of the National Council. In 1953, he was elected as the union's vice president, then in 1956 he became its president, and finally in 1960 he was elected as general secretary of the national union. The General Council of the Trades Union Congress is an elected body which is responsible for carrying out the policies agreed at the annual British Trade Union Congresses (TUC). Organisation The council has 56 members, all of whom must be proposed by one of the unions affiliated to the TUC.
