Auguste Barth (born in Strasbourg 22 May 1834; died in Paris 15 April 1916) was a French orientalist. Biography He is best known by his work in connection with the religions of India. His volume, ''Les religions de l'Inde'' (Paris, 1879), was translated into English (London, 1882). Mention may also be made of his ''Inscriptions sanscrites du Cambodge'' (Sanskrit inscriptions of Cambodia; Paris, 1885) and of numerous monographs and reviews in ''Journal Asiatique'', in ''Mélusine'', and in the ''Mémoires de la Société de Linguistique''. His annual reports on researches into the history of Indian religions, in ''Revue de l'Histoire des Religions'' (1880) are especially valuable. He was a member of the French Institute. Wolf Barth
The wolf (''Canis lupus''; : wolves), also known as the gray wolf or grey wolf, is a large canine native to Eurasia and North America. More than thirty subspecies of ''Canis lupus'' have been recognized, and gray wolves, as popularly understood, comprise wild subspecies. The wolf is the largest extant member of the family Canidae. It is also distinguished from other ''Canis'' species by its less pointed ears and muzzle, as well as a shorter torso and a longer tail. The wolf is nonetheless related closely enough to smaller ''Canis'' species, such as the coyote and the golden jackal, to produce fertile hybrids with them. Uta Barth
Uta Barth (born 1958) is a contemporary German-American photographer whose work addresses themes such as perception, optical illusion and non-place. Her early work emerged in the late 1980s and 1990s, "inverting the notion of background and foreground" in photography and bringing awareness to a viewer's attention to visual information with in the photographic frame. Her work is as much about vision and perception as it is about the failure to see, the faith humans place in the mechanics of perception, and the precarious nature of perceptual habits. Barth's says this about her art practice: “The question for me always is how can I make you aware of your own looking, instead of losing your attention to thoughts about what it is that you are looking at." She has been honored with two National Endowments of the Arts fellowships, was a recipient of the John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship in 2004‑05, and was a 2012 MacArthur Fellow. Theodor Barth
Theodor Barth (16 July 1849, Duderstadt – 3 June 1909, Baden-Baden) was a German liberal politician and publicist. He was a member of the Reichstag between 1881 and 1884, between 1885 and 1898, and between 1901 and 1903. Career Barth started his political career with the National Liberal Party. He soon rejected the Manchesterism of the old liberals, though, and claimed that liberalism needed a social programme. To that end, he sought the cooperation of the Social Democrats, and at multiple times voted against his own party. In the German Freeminded Party (''Freisinnige Partei''), founded in 1884, Barth would soon find himself opposed to the leadership of Eugen Richter. When the Freeminded Party split in 1893, Barth became a member of the Freeminded Union (''Freisinnigen Vereinigung''), instead of the Freeminded People's Party of Richter. Sonja Louise Barth (21 May 1923 – 10 September 2016, ) was a Norwegian environmentalist. During World War II she was active in XU, the secret Norwegian resistance operation whose activities were kept secret until 1988. In 2008 she described her experiences to Lars Otto Wollum, on condition that he publish nothing of them until after her death. In 2008 she was appointed to the Royal Norwegian Order of Saint Olav. The citation referred to her work in public education and the dissemination of natural and cultural history, and to her work in the Rondane region. Richard Barth
Richard Barth (5 June 1850 in Grosswanzleben, Saxony – 25 December 1923 in Marburg) was a left-handed German violin virtuoso, conductor, music teacher and composer in the circle of Johannes Brahms. His ''Ciacona in B minor,'' Op. 21, composed in 1908, is a finely crafted tribute to J.S. Bach's Chaconne in post- Paganini technical and tonal terms. Biography Barth was born in Saxony and from 1863 to 1867 studied with the renowned violinist Joseph Joachim. Barth used his left hand for bowing and his right hand for fingering and so played the violin "in reverse." Nonetheless, he was successful as a violinist and served as concertmaster of orchestras in Munster, Krefeld and Marburg and headed a string quartet. He was also a successful music teacher. He was music director of the university in Marburg before he moved to Hamburg where he became conductor of the Philharmonie and the Singakademie and directed the Conservatory beginning in 1908. Kaspar von Barth (21 June 1587 – 17 September 1658) was a German philologist and writer. Barth was born at Küstrin (today Kostrzyn in Poland) in the Neumark region of Brandenburg. A precocious child, he was looked upon as a marvel of learning. After studying at Gotha, Eisenach, Wittenberg, and Jena, he travelled extensively, visiting most of the countries of Europe. Too independent to accept any regular post, he lived alternately at Halle and on his property at Sellerhausen in Leipzig. Because his library and manuscripts were destroyed by a fire at Sellerhausen, Barth moved to the Paulinum at Leipzig, where he died. Barth was a voluminous writer. Markus Barth (6 October 1915 – 1 July 1994) was a Swiss scholar of theology. He lived in Bern, Basel, Berlin, and Edinburgh and was the son of the seminal Protestant theologian Karl Barth. From 1940 to 1953 he was a Reformed Pastor in Bubendorf near Basel. In 1947 he received a doctorate in New Testament from the University of Göttingen. Between 1953 and 1972 he held professorships in New Testament at Dubuque Theological Seminary, University of Chicago Divinity School, and Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. From 1973 to 1985 he was professor of New Testament at the University of Basel. His three areas of interest were the sacramental understanding of Baptism and Lord's Supper, the theology of the Pauline Epistles and Jewish-Christian dialogue.
