Barraclough Shield
The Barraclough Shield is the trophy for interstate rugby union matches between the New South Wales Suburban and Queensland Suburban representative teams, colloquially known as "Subbies". The Barraclough Shield was first contested in 1966 and was named after Lindley John Forbes (John) Barraclough AM (1926-2005), a former New South Wales MP and stalwart of New South Wales Suburban Rugby. History As of 2020, New South Wales have won the Barraclough Shield on forty three occasions, Queensland have won five, with three matches drawn. Recent matches have usually been played at Ballymore Stadium in Brisbane, but the match in the 50th year of Subbies Rugby in Queensland was played at Suncorp Stadium as the curtain-raiser to the Queensland Reds match against the British and Irish Lions. New South Wales Suburban Rugby Union
The New South Wales Suburban Rugby Union, or NSWSRU, is affiliated to the New South Wales Rugby Union and runs the competition affectionately known as "Subbies" rugby. There are around 7500 players and 55 clubs competing across 6 divisions, making "Subbies" the largest centrally administered rugby competition in the world. NSWSRU is truly the grassroots of rugby in Sydney. The major trophy in "Subbies" is the Kentwell Cup that is awarded to the first grade premiers of the first division competition. The NSWSRU selects representative sides to compete against New South Wales Country for the Maher-Ross Cup, and Queensland Suburban for the Barraclough Shield. Queensland Suburban Rugby Union
The Queensland Suburban Rugby Union, or QSRU, is affiliated to the Queensland Rugby Union (QRU) and runs the rugby competition colloquially known as "Subbies" in Brisbane and South East Queensland. The QSRU selects a representative side to play annual matches against NSW Suburban, for the Barraclough Shield. The major "Subbies" trophy is the Barber Cup, awarded to the first grade premiers of the first division. The Subbies competition has around 1000 players and 20 clubs competing in three divisions, spread across Brisbane spanning from Redcliffe to Beenleigh, and Wynnum to Ipswich. The competition is for amateur players, and provides another tier of rugby below the Brisbane premier club competition. Ballymore Stadium
Ballymore is a rugby union stadium situated in Herston, Queensland, Herston, a suburb of Brisbane, Australia. It is the headquarters of Queensland Rugby Union and was the home ground of the Brisbane City (rugby team), Brisbane City team in the National Rugby Championship, until the league's disbandment in 2019. The Queensland Reds is the rugby union team for the Australian state of Queensland that competes in the Southern Hemisphere's Super Rugby competition. Prior to 1996, they were a representative team selected from the rugby union club competitions in Queensland.
