Barrack Square
Barrack Square is an open public square on the foreshore of Perth Water on the Swan River (Western Australia), Swan River, located at the southern end of Barrack Street, Perth, Barrack Street near the central business district of Perth, Western Australia. It has also been known as Union Jack Square, Flagstaff Square and Harper Square. Usage The Swan Bells are located at Barrack Square, as well as cafés, restaurants and jetties. There are six jetties (so the area is sometimes referred to as the Barrack Street Jetties), including the Barrack Street Jetty used by Transperth. Commercial companies also use the jetties for trips to Rottnest Island and river cruises. The West Australian Rowing Club has had a presence adjacent to the square since the nineteenth century. Redevelopment As part of the 2012 Elizabeth Quay, Perth waterfront development, the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority are planning and surveying changes to the Barrack Square area. Barrack Street, Perth
Barrack Street is one of two major cross-streets in the Perth central business district, central business district of Perth, Western Australia. Together with St Georges Terrace, Wellington Street, Perth, Wellington Street and William Street, Perth, William Street it defines the boundary of the main shopping precinct of the central city. Route description Barrack Street commences at Barrack Street Jetty, and the adjacent Barrack Square. Perth is the capital and largest city of the Australian state of Western Australia. The Swan River () is a river in the south west of Western Australia. The river runs through the metropolitan area of Perth, Western Australia's capital and largest city. Course of river The Swan River estuary flows through the city of Perth. Its lower reaches are relatively wide and deep, with few constrictions, while the upper reaches are usually quite narrow and shallow. The Swan River drains the Avon and coastal plain catchments, which have a total area of about . It has three major tributaries, the Avon River, Canning River and Helena River. The latter two have dams (Canning Dam and Mundaring Weir) which provide a sizeable part of the potable water requirements for Perth and the regions surrounding. Swan Bells
The Swan Bells are a set of 18 bells hanging in a specially built copper and glass campanile in Perth, Western Australia. The tower is commonly known as The Bell Tower or the Swan Bell Tower. Taking their name from the Swan River, which their tower overlooks, and forming a sixteen-bell peal with two extra chromatic notes, they are the second largest set of change ringing bells in the world, the largest being Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, which has nineteen bells. Twelve of the set are historic bells from St Martin-in-the-Fields church in Trafalgar Square in London; six others, cast in recent times by the Whitechapel Bell Foundry, round off the set. Barrack Street Jetty
Barrack Street Jetty is located on the edge of Perth Water on the Swan River in Perth, Western Australia. It is no longer used on the Transperth ferry service between the Perth central business district and South Perth, having been replaced on that service with Elizabeth Quay Jetty. Historically, it has been a significant location on Perth Waterfront at the end of Barrack Street. The first jetty built on the site was known as King Cole's Jetty and Cole's Jetty, named after Henry Laroche Cole, the first chairman of the Perth City Council. Today six jetties exist. As part of the Elizabeth Quay project, Barrack Street Jetty is to be reconfigured with jetties 1 and 5 extended and jetty 6 demolished. Transperth
Transperth is the brand name of the public transport system serving the city and suburban areas of Perth, the state capital of Western Australia. It is managed by the Public Transport Authority (PTA), a state government organisation. Train operations are done by Transperth Train Operations, a division of the PTA. Rottnest Island
Rottnest Island ( nys, Wadjemup), often colloquially referred to as "Rotto", is a island off the coast of Western Australia, located west of Fremantle. A sandy, low-lying island formed on a base of aeolianite limestone, Rottnest is an A-class reserve, the highest level of protection afforded to public land. Together with Garden Island, Rottnest Island is a remnant of Pleistocene dune ridges. Along with several other islands, Rottnest became separated from the mainland around 7,000 years ago, when sea levels rose; the traditional Noongar name for the island is ''Wadjemup'', which means "place across the water where the spirits are". Human artefacts have been found on the island dating back at least 30,000 years, but visitation and habitation of the island by the Noongar people appears to have ceased following its separation from the mainland. West Australian Rowing Club
The West Australian Rowing Club is a rowing club based in Perth, Western Australia. The club has operated out of a boatshed next to Barrack Square since 1906. History While the current club was incorporated in 1894, the club believes it has roots dating back to 1868. It was the first rowing club in Western Australia, and is the last one remaining on the Perth city foreshore. The club opened a boatshed next to Barrack Square in March 1906. Elizabeth Quay
Elizabeth Quay is a mixed-use development project in the Perth#cbd, Perth central business district. Focusing on an area located on the north shore of Perth Water near the landmark Swan Bells, the precinct being developed by the project was named in honour of the former Elizabeth II, Queen Elizabeth II during her Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II, Diamond Jubilee. The project includes construction of an artificial inlet on what was previously the Esplanade Reserve, and modifications to the surrounding environs including Barrack Square. The project plan shows nine building sites. Completed facilities are projected to include 1,700 residential apartments, of office space and of retail space. Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority
The Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority (MRA) was a statutory authority of the Government of Western Australia. It was established on 1 January 2012 pursuant to the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority Act 2011 and reported to the Minister for Planning.
