Barrack Street Jetty
Barrack Street Jetty is located on the edge of Perth Water on the Swan River in Perth, Western Australia. It is no longer used on the Transperth ferry service between the Perth central business district and South Perth, having been replaced on that service with Elizabeth Quay Jetty. Historically, it has been a significant location on Perth Waterfront at the end of Barrack Street. The first jetty built on the site was known as King Cole's Jetty and Cole's Jetty, named after Henry Laroche Cole, the first chairman of the Perth City Council. Today six jetties exist. As part of the Elizabeth Quay project, Barrack Street Jetty is to be reconfigured with jetties 1 and 5 extended and jetty 6 demolished. Barrack Square
Barrack Square is an open public square on the foreshore of Perth Water on the Swan River (Western Australia), Swan River, located at the southern end of Barrack Street, Perth, Barrack Street near the central business district of Perth, Western Australia. It has also been known as Union Jack Square, Flagstaff Square and Harper Square. Usage The Swan Bells are located at Barrack Square, as well as cafés, restaurants and jetties. There are six jetties (so the area is sometimes referred to as the Barrack Street Jetties), including the Barrack Street Jetty used by Transperth. Commercial companies also use the jetties for trips to Rottnest Island and river cruises. The West Australian Rowing Club has had a presence adjacent to the square since the nineteenth century. Redevelopment As part of the 2012 Elizabeth Quay, Perth waterfront development, the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority are planning and surveying changes to the Barrack Square area. A jetty is a structure that projects from land out into water. A jetty may serve as a breakwater, as a walkway, or both; or, in pairs, as a means of constricting a channel. Barrack Street, Perth
Barrack Street is one of two major cross-streets in the Perth central business district, central business district of Perth, Western Australia. Together with St Georges Terrace, Wellington Street, Perth, Wellington Street and William Street, Perth, William Street it defines the boundary of the main shopping precinct of the central city. Perth Central Area Transit
The Perth Central Area Transit (Perth CAT) system, or simply CAT, consists of five bus routes in the centre of Perth, one bus route in Fremantle, and three bus routes in Joondalup. Similar services exist in Rockingham (the City Centre Transit System) and Midland (the Midland Gate Shuttle). Unlike all other Transperth services, most CAT routes are free. Perth CAT On 23 September 1996, MetroBus commenced operating two CAT routes: the Red CAT and the Blue CAT, replacing the City Clipper services that had operated since September 1973. Rottnest Island
Rottnest Island ( nys, Wadjemup), often colloquially referred to as "Rotto", is a island off the coast of Western Australia, located west of Fremantle. A sandy, low-lying island formed on a base of aeolianite limestone, Rottnest is an A-class reserve, the highest level of protection afforded to public land. Together with Garden Island, Rottnest Island is a remnant of Pleistocene dune ridges. Along with several other islands, Rottnest became separated from the mainland around 7,000 years ago, when sea levels rose; the traditional Noongar name for the island is ''Wadjemup'', which means "place across the water where the spirits are". Human artefacts have been found on the island dating back at least 30,000 years, but visitation and habitation of the island by the Noongar people appears to have ceased following its separation from the mainland. Mends Street Jetty
Mends Street Jetty is located in South Perth in Western Australia. The jetty is on the southern shore of the Swan River in the section known as Perth Water. The ferry service is primarily used for accessing the Perth Zoo from the Perth central business district. History It is not known when the first jetty at Mends Street was built, however, with the opening of the Perth Zoo in October 1898 it was recognised that a regular cross-river ferry service was needed. Therefore, at about that time, the existing jetty was widened to and an existing service that ran between William Street and Queen Street Jetty was extended to Mends Street. The service was run by Joseph Charles, who operated the ''Queen'' (later ''Empress'') and the ''Princess''. Elizabeth Quay
Elizabeth Quay is a mixed-use development project in the Perth#cbd, Perth central business district. Focusing on an area located on the north shore of Perth Water near the landmark Swan Bells, the precinct being developed by the project was named in honour of the former Elizabeth II, Queen Elizabeth II during her Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II, Diamond Jubilee. The project includes construction of an artificial inlet on what was previously the Esplanade Reserve, and modifications to the surrounding environs including Barrack Square. The project plan shows nine building sites. Completed facilities are projected to include 1,700 residential apartments, of office space and of retail space. Esplanade Reserve
The Esplanade Reserve in Perth, Western Australia was a heritage listed public space between Perth Water and the Perth central business district. It formed part of, and was occasionally referred to incorrectly as, the Perth foreshore and the Perth waterfront. The public space was resumed by the Western Australian state government in April 2012 as part of the Elizabeth Quay redevelopment of the Perth waterfront area.
