Barnet Tunnel
The Barnet Tunnel is a railway tunnel in north London on the East Coast Main Line. It has also been known as East Barnet Tunnel, Whetstone Tunnel, and Oakleigh Park Tunnel. Location The tunnel is in London Borough of Barnet in north London. It passes under Russell Lane which joins Oakleigh Road North to Brunswick Park Road. The station to the north of the tunnel is Oakleigh Park (1873) and to the south, New Southgate (1850). Immediately to the north of the tunnel is Oakleigh Park Rail Cutting between the tunnel entrance and Oakleigh Park station. History The tunnel was built as part of the Great Northern Railway from 23 April 1849. It is 605 yards in length. It is now called Barnet Tunnel, but has also been known as East Barnet Tunnel and Whetstone Tunnel. East Barnet is an area of north London within the London Borough of Barnet bordered by New Barnet, Cockfosters and Southgate. It is a largely residential suburb whose central area contains shops, public houses, restaurants and services, and the parish church of St Mary the Virgin. Whetstone is a place in the London Borough of Barnet, bearing the postcode N20. It is to the east of Totteridge, and these areas are known together as Totteridge and Whetstone. Whetstone is around 8.5 miles North of Charing Cross and is within the boundaries of the historic county of Middlesex. The combined areas of Totteridge and Whetstone was, at the outset of the 21st century, found to be the 63rd-richest of the more than 9,000 wards of the United Kingdom. David Berguer
David Ian Berguer (born October 1939) is a British local historian and author, and the chairman of the Friern Barnet and District Local History Society. His books include ''The Friern Hospital Story'' (2012), the story of the former Colney Hatch Asylum. Writing His career was in media management in the advertising industry. He retired in 2000 and at that time was one of the founders of the Friern Barnet and District Local History Society. His first book was ''Under the Wires at Tally Ho'', an examination of the trams and trolleybuses that once served the area of Finchley in north London. This was followed by ''The Friern Hospital Story'', which examined the complete history of the former Colney Hatch Asylum, later known as Friern Hospital, from its design and opening in 1851 to its closure in 1993, and subsequent conversion to flats known as Princess Park Manor. Edinburgh Waverley railway station (also known simply as Waverley; gd, Waverley Dhùn Èideann) is the principal railway station serving Edinburgh, Scotland. The Great Northern Railway (GNR) was a British railway company incorporated in 1846 with the object of building a line from London to York. Oakleigh Park Rail Cutting
Oakleigh Park Rail Cutting is an Site of Nature Conservation Interest, Site of Local Importance for Nature Conservation in Oakleigh Park in the London Borough of Barnet. It is on the East Coast Main Line between Oakleigh Park railway station and Barnet Tunnel to its south. The site is a wide railway cutting with a diversity of habitat which provides a good example of railway ecology. The eastern bank has extensive brambles with clumps of blackthorn and hawthorn, and herbs such as Chamerion angustifolium, rosebay willowherb and Aster amellus, Michaelmas daisy. The western bank is more natural with mature woodland of oak, ash and sycamore, and silver birch near the tunnel. The site is a useful habitat for birds such as goldfinch, wrens and dunnocks. The cutting can be viewed from a footbridge between Alverstone Avenue and Oakleigh Park South.
