''Barkley Shut Up and Jam!'' is a basketball video game originally developed and published by Accolade for the Sega Genesis on North America in 1993 and later in Europe in April 1994. It is the first entry in the ''Barkley Shut Up and Jam'' series, featuring former NBA MVP Charles Barkley prominently and as one of the playable characters. Featuring arcade-style gameplay similar to Midway's ''NBA Jam'' but closely following the rules seen in street basketball, players compete with either CPU-controlled opponents or against other players in matches across various cities of the United States. Accolade (company)
Accolade, Inc. (later Infogrames North America, Inc.) was an American video game developer and publisher based in San Jose, California. The company was founded as Accolade in 1984 by Alan Miller and Bob Whitehead, who had previously co-founded Activision in 1979. The company became known for numerous sports game series, including ''HardBall!, Jack Nicklaus'' and ''Test Drive''. By the early 1990s, Accolade saw critical acclaim for '' Star Control'' (1990), as well as strong sales for ''Bubsy'' (1993). However, Sega sued Accolade for creating unauthorized Sega Genesis games by reverse-engineering the console's boot-protection. ''Barkley Shut Up and Jam 2'' is a 1995 basketball video game developed and published by Accolade exclusively for the Sega Genesis. The game is a sequel to 1994's ''Barkley Shut Up and Jam!'' Piko Interactive acquired the rights to the game and re-released it in a compilation cartridge for the Evercade handheld under the name ''Hoops Shut Up and Jam 2'' in 2021. Gameplay The game is played from a horizontal perspective as the player and its teammate (computer or human) try to outscore the competition using any means necessary. Players can choose from ten "streetwise" players, not including Charles Barkley himself, as they play in either an exhibition game or tournament.
