Shawkat Hossain Hiron ( bn, শওকত হোসেন হিরণ) was a Bangladesh Awami League politician and member of parliament for Barisal-5. Early life Hiron was born on 15 October 1956 in Patuakhali, East Pakistan, Pakistan. Career Hiron joined the Jatiya Party (Ershad) in 1986. He joined Bangladesh Awami League 1997. He became the president of the Barisal City unit of the Bangladesh Awami League in 2012. He was elected Mayor of Barisal City 4 August 2008. He lost the reelection of Barisal Mayoral election on 15 June 2013. He was elected member of parliament from Barisal-5 on 5 January 2014 uncontested. Jebunnesa Afroz is a Bangladesh Awami League politician and Member of Parliament in the 10th session of the parliament. She was elected from Barisal-5. Biography Afroz was married to Shawkat Hossain Hiron. He was a politician of Bangladesh Awami League and Member of Parliament from Barisal-5 constituency of Barisal District. He died on 9 April 2014 and left the seat of Barisal-5 vacant. A by-election was declared for the constituency for which she announced her candidacy. 2018 Bangladeshi General Election
General elections were held in Bangladesh on 30 December 2018 to elect 300 directly-elected members of the Jatiya Sangsad. The result was a landslide victory for the Awami League led by Sheikh Hasina. According to political scientist Ali Riaz, the elections were not free and fair. The BBC News reported that they were marred by violence and allegations of vote rigging. Opposition leader Kamal Hossain rejected the results, calling it "farcical" and demanding fresh elections to be held under a neutral government. The Jatiya Sangsad ( bn, জাতীয় সংসদ, lit=National Parliament, translit=Jatiyô Sôngsôd), often referred to simply as the ''Sangsad'' or JS and also known as the House of the Nation, is the supreme legislative body of Bangladesh. The current parliament of Bangladesh contains 350 seats, including 50 seats reserved exclusively for women. Elected occupants are called Member of Parliament, or MP. General elections were held in Bangladesh on 1 October 2001.
