Barcoo Shire Council
The Shire of Barcoo is a local government area in Central West Queensland, Australia. In June 2018, the shire had a population of 267 people. It covers an area of , and has existed as a local government entity since 1887. It is named for the Barcoo River which reaches a confluence with the Thomson River in the shire to form Cooper Creek. The major industry in the shire is beef production and some opal mining. There has been some development of the known oil and gas reserves in the region. History Kuungkari (also known as Kungkari and Koonkerri) is a language of Western Queensland. The Kuungkari language region includes the landscape within the local government boundaries of Longreach Shire Council and Blackall-Tambo Shire Council. Thomson River (Queensland)
The Thomson River is a perennial river that forms part of the Lake Eyre Basin, situated in the central west and western regions of Queensland, Australia. Much of the course of the river comprises a series of narrow channels synonymous with the Channel Country and the Galilee subregion. The river was named in 1847 by the explorer, Edmund Kennedy, in honour of The Hon. Sir Edward Deas Thomson , the Colonial Secretary of New South Wales at the time of discovery. Windorah, Queensland
Windorah is a town and a locality in the Shire of Barcoo, Queensland, Australia. It is one of only three towns in the Shire of Barcoo in Central West Queensland. In the , Windorah had a population of 115 people. Geography Located downstream from where the Thomson and Barcoo Rivers join to form the multi-channelled Cooper Creek, the Shire covers an area of 60,901 km2, the town has a population of 60 people, with a further 40 living at surrounding stations. A landscape of rocky outcrops, multiple sand hills and black soil flood plains make up most of the area surrounding the town. Water in the town follows the outback cycle of boom and bust. During a wet year Cooper Creek may flood more than a half a dozen times, during the dry it becomes a chain of waterholes. Tanbar Station
Tanbar Station is a pastoral lease that currently operates as a cattle station in Tanbar, Shire of Barcoo, Queensland, Australia. It is located approximately south west of Windorah and north east of Innamincka in the Channel Country of Queensland. The Cooper Creek runs through the property. Established at some time prior to 1884 by John Costello he sold it to Armitage and Gillately shortly after taking it up. In 1886 the property was having a good season with of rain recorded in less than a month and all the waterholes were full John Henderson was running Tanbar in 1888. Mr B. Richardson acquired both Tanbar and Abbottsford Station, which is also on Cooper Creek, in 1903. By 1907 the Christian brothers owned Tanbar. The property was sold in 1911 when it was stocked with 10,000 cattle by the Christian brothers to the Rocklands Pastoral Company for £30,000. The Shire of Isisford was a local government area located in central western Queensland, between the towns of Longreach and Blackall. It covered an area of , and existed as a local government entity from 1908 until 2008, when it amalgamated with the Shires of Ilfracombe and Longreach to form the Longreach Region. Stonehenge is an outback town and locality in the Shire of Barcoo, Queensland, Australia. In the , Stonehenge had a population of 44 people. Geography Stonehenge is in the Channel Country. Nearby is one of three areas used to base the Australian Department of Defence's over-the-horizon radar system. History Its name originates from when the area was a stopping point for bullock teams. A stone hut used by the bullock drivers to overnight in eventually fell into disuse, and the stone remains became known as 'Stonehenge'. The Stonehenge State School opened on 3 September 1900. ''The Morning Bulletin'' is an online newspaper servicing the city of Rockhampton and the surrounding areas of Central Queensland, Australia. From 1861 to 2020, ''The Morning Bulletin'' was published as a print edition, before then becoming an exclusively online newspaper. The final print edition was published on 27 June 2020. History The first issue of ''The Bulletin'' was launched on 9 July 1861. It is the second oldest business in Rockhampton, the oldest being the Criterion Hotel which was established in October 1860. The founder and original owner, William Hitchcock Buzacott (1831–1880, brother of Charles Hardie Buzacott), brought the press and equipment from Sydney in 1861 where he operated a small weekly paper.
