Barcelona Ladies Open
The Barcelona Ladies Open was a tennis tournament for women held in Barcelona in Catalonia (Spain) and was played on outdoor clay courts. It was an International-level tournament on the WTA Tour with total prize money of $220,000. The tournament began in November 2003 as a $10,000 challenger event on the ITF Women's Circuit. Prize money was increased to $25,000 the following year; in 2005, the event was moved to October with the prize money increasing to $75,000. In 2007, the tournament was upgraded to the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, becoming a Tier IV played in June, and remained in this classification through 2008. Since 2009, the event has been held in April. In 2013 the event was cancelled due to financial reasons and replaced on the tour by the Nuremberg Cup in Nuremberg, Germany, held the week before Roland Garros. Laura Pous Tió (born 1 October 1984) is a former professional tennis player from Spain. Career Pous Tió won the gold medal at the 2005 Mediterranean Games in Almería by defeating compatriot Nuria Llagostera Vives in straight sets. She won 20 ITF titles in singles and nine in doubles. Roberta Vinci (; born 18 February 1983) is an Italian professional padel and former tennis player. In doubles tennis, she won five major tournaments and reached the world No. 1 position. She also reached a career-high ranking of world No. 7 in singles, in May 2016. María José Martínez Sánchez (; born 12 August 1982) is a Spanish retired professional tennis player. In singles, she has won five WTA singles titles, her biggest being a Premier 5 title at the 2010 Italian Open where she defeated two former World No. 1 players, Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Janković, en route to the title. The 2008 Barcelona KIA was a women's tennis tournament played on outdoor clay courts. It was the second edition of the Barcelona KIA, and was part of the Tier IV Series of the 2008 WTA Tour. Klaudia Edina Gallovits-Hall (née Gallovits; born December 10, 1984) is a Romanian-born American tennis player. Her career-high ranking of No. 54 she achieved on April 28, 2008. Meghann Shaughnessy (born April 13, 1979 in Richmond, Virginia) is an American former professional tennis player. She achieved a career-high singles ranking of world No. 11 in 2001 and won six titles on the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Tour.
