Barachois Pond Provincial Park
Barachois Pond Provincial Park is a large and popular Provincial Park in the southwest of the island of Newfoundland. The park covers an area of . The park is off the Trans-Canada Highway, near Stephenville. There is a hiking path to the top of Erin Mountain, a peak in the Long Range Mountains, which run along the west coast of Newfoundland. This trail takes about 2 hours and goes by many streams and wildlife. Barachois Pond is a large lake located in the park. Chipmunks were first introduced into Newfoundland here. Stephenville (Canada 2021 Census population 6540) is a town in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, on the west coast of the island of Newfoundland. The town functions as a local service centre for the southwestern part of the island, serving a direct population of 35,000 people from surrounding areas and over 100,000 people along the entire southwestern coast of the island. The primary employer in the town was a paper mill, which closed in 2005. Long Range Mountains
The Long Range Mountains are a series of mountains along the west coast of the Canadian island of Newfoundland. The long range mountains form the northernmost section of the Appalachian mountain chain on the eastern seaboard of North America. Mapping of the Great Northern Peninsula was first done in the early 1900s by Mattie Mitchell, Mi'kmaq chieftain, guide and explorer. In 2003, it was announced that the International Appalachian Trail would be extended through the Long Range Mountains. A portion of the trail opened in 2006. Chipmunks are small, striped rodents of the family Sciuridae. Chipmunks are found in North America, with the exception of the Siberian chipmunk which is found primarily in Asia. Barachois
A barachois is a term used in Atlantic Canada, Saint Pierre and Miquelon, Réunion and Mauritius Island to describe a coastal lagoon partially or totally separated from the ocean by a sand or shingle bar. Sometimes the bar is constructed of boulders, as is the case at Freshwater Bay near St. John’s, Newfoundland. Salt water may enter the barachois during high tide. The bar often is formed as a result of sediment deposited in the delta region of a river or – as is the case in Miquelon – by a tombolo. Name The English term comes from the French language, where the word is pronounced . The term comes from a Basque word, ''barratxoa'', meaning ''little bar''.
