Bankes Family
The Bankes family were prominent landed gentry in Dorset, England, for over 400 years. They owned large portions of land throughout Dorset and made significant contributions to the political history and development of the country. Buildings The first family seat was in Corfe Castle which was destroyed during the civil war when the Bankeses, who were cavaliers (royalist followers), were besieged by parliament forces. After the return of King Charles II the Bankeses again rose to political power. Their new home, built at Kingston Lacy has survived until the present day, under the guide of the National Trust. The family vault is located in the Church of Wimborne Minster, not far from their Kingston Lacy estate. In the late 19th century the Bankeses built a summer beach house at Studland in Dorset. Anne Bankes
Anne Bankes (1759–1778) was an English pastellist. Born in Dorset, Bankes was the sister of Henry Bankes of Kingston Lacy. It is thought that she was taught the art of pastel by Harriet Woodley. An oil portrait of her with her mother, painted by Richard Roper, still exists in the collection at Kingston Lacy. It has been suggested that Bankes may be confused with her niece, Anne Frances Banks (1790–1864), later in life the wife of Edward Boscawen. Charlotte Bankes
Charlotte Bankes (born 10 June 1995) is a British-born snowboarder who represented France in international competition before the start of the 2018–2019 season and Great Britain from that point onwards. She competed at the 2022 Winter Olympics, in Women's snowboard cross. Career Bankes and her family moved from Hemel Hempstead to Puy-Saint-Vincent in the southern Alps in 1999. She had already started skiing by this time, having first tried it at age two, but took up snowboarding in the footsteps of her brothers William and Thomas, who have competed in the sport internationally. She started competing internationally for France in 2010. The following year she sustained a pelvis fracture in a crash, which left her in "constant pain" and unable to train at full intensity for several years. Bankes Coffee Stores (also known as E. Bankes & Co.) was a chain of stores that operated in the Chicago region throughout the early 20th century. The company was founded in 1882 by Ireland-born Edward Bankes (c.1860–1936) as a tea and coffee mercantile business. John Eldon Bankes
Sir John Eldon Bankes, (17 April 1854 – 31 December 1946) was a Welsh judge of the King's Bench Division of the High Court of Justice, and later the Lord Justice of Appeal. Biography Born in Northop, Flintshire on 17 April 1854, he was the eldest son of John Scott Bankes (1826-1896) and his first wife, Annie (1829-1876), daughter of Sir John Jervis, himself a chief justice. He was educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford, where he rowed for Oxford University Boat Club. Called to the Bar in 1878, he took silk in 1901. Whilst on the bench, he was often referred to as J. Eldon Bankes. In 1910 he became a judge of the High Court, and in 1915 a Lord Justice of Appeal and a Privy Councillor. He retired from the bench in 1927. Bankes was chairman of Quarter Sessions in Flintshire for 33 years, and as a Conservative an active member of Flintshire County Council, of which he was chairman in 1933. Lyn Bankes (1941) is a former member of the Michigan House of Representatives, representing areas near Livonia, Michigan and Redford, Michigan in House District 19 from 1982 to 1998. The district was originally labeled as district 35 until 1993. In 1995, it was noted that she coordinated "a yearly event to recognize business leaders who provide support for their employee's child care needs." The next year, Vote Smart noted that she did not provide voters answers to their National Political Awareness test, a survey on political officials' political views.
