Banjalučka Pivara
Banjalučka pivara, or Banja Luka Brewery, is a Bosnian brewing company based in Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the country's second-largest city. The company was founded as part of activities by the Trappist order in the village of Delibaša. After World War II the brewery was nationalized and in 1975 included in newly founded company "Bosanska Krajina". 145 years ago, in a small place beside Banja Luka, beside the Vrbas grove, a brave little Banja Luka brewery was created by the work of a trappist monk from the Marija Zvijezda monastery. The founder of this small brewery was Franz Pfanner, the leader of the Trappist Order in Banja Luka, who together with other monks, besides the brewery, also established a cheese factory to produce the famous Trappista cheese, as well as one of the first power plants in Europe, adhering to his modest lifestyle and chore "Pray and work" ("Ora et labora"). Đorđe Petrović ( sr-Cyrl, Ђорђе Петровић, ), better known by the sobriquet Karađorđe ( sr-Cyrl, Карађорђе, lit=Black George, ; – ), was a Serbian revolutionary who led the struggle for his country's independence from the Ottoman Empire during the First Serbian Uprising of 1804–1813. Lager () is beer which has been brewed and conditioned at low temperature. Lagers can be pale, amber, or dark. Pale lager is the most widely consumed and commercially available style of beer. Trappista ( hbs, Trapist sir / Трапист сир) is a traditional semi-hard cow's-milk cheese made in France, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Hungary. It was created by the Trappist monks of Port-du-Salut Abbey in France. History The origins of the cheese can be traced back to the 18th-century monks of the French abbey of Port-du-Salut. Franz Pfanner (1825 – 24 May 1909), also anglicised as Francis Pfanner, was an Austrian Trappist abbot and founder of Mariannhill Monastery in South Africa and the Mariastern Abbey in Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Life Born to Francis Anton Pfanner and Anna Maria Fink in 1825, Franz Pfanner attended high schools in Feldkirch and humanistic studies at Innsbruck. Later, he studied philosophy in Padua (1845) and theology in Brixen (1846). In 1848, he battled tuberculosis. On 27 July 1850, he was appointed parish priest at Haselstauden, near Dornbirn. In 1859, he was appointed an Austrian army chaplain in the Italian campaign against Napoleon III, but the war was over before he could take up his appointment. Mariastern Abbey ( sh, Opatija Marija Zvijezda) is a Trappist abbey in Bosnia and Herzegovina, situated near the country's second largest city Banja Luka. It consists of the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the monastery of Trappist monks. It is the only Trappist monastery in Southeastern Europe.
