Bangladesh Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority
Bangladesh Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority () is a Bangladesh government regulatory agency under the Ministry of Science and Technology responsible for regulating nuclear energy in Bangladesh. History The Bangladesh Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority was established in 2013 after the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Regulatory Act 2012 was passed by the parliament of Bangladesh. The authority is responsible for formulating safety rules regarding the use of nuclear energy. The agency is accountable to a special committee of the parliament of Bangladesh. The agency was formed on 12 February 2013. Naiyyum Choudhury was the founder chairman of the Authority and worked till his death in the post. Activities BAERA oversees the safety aspects of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant. The authority gave the site license on 26 June 2016 and gave the required license for the design and construction of the plant on 4 November 2017. Naiyyum Choudhury
Naiyyum Choudhury (27 September 1944 – 7 September 2019) was a Bangladeshi biotechnologist and a nuclear scientist. He pioneered the development and adoption of the National Biotechnology policy of Bangladesh. He served as the Chairman of Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission, and also served in many important positions in Bangladesh. He was serving as the founding Chairman of Bangladesh Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (BAERA) at the time of his death. He was the Chairman of the Department of Microbiology, Dhaka University, Professor and Coordinator of Biotechnology at BRAC University, and served as faculty member in Jahangir Nagar University and BUET. Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant
The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant ( bn, রূপপুর পারমাণবিক বিদ্যুৎকেন্দ্র) will be a 2.4 GWe nuclear power plant in Bangladesh. The nuclear power plant is being constructed at Rooppur of Ishwardi upazila in Pabna District, on the bank of the river Padma, west of Dhaka. It will be the country's first nuclear power plant, and the first of the two units is expected to go into operation in 2024. The VVER-1200/523 Nuclear reactor and critical infrastructures are being built by the Russian Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation.
