Bamboccianti
The ''Bamboccianti'' were genre painters active in Rome from about 1625 until the end of the seventeenth century. Most were Dutch and Flemish artists who brought existing traditions of depicting peasant subjects from sixteenth-century Netherlandish art with them to Italy, and generally created small cabinet paintings or etchings of the everyday life of the lower classes in Rome and its countryside.Haskell, pp. 132–134. Michelangelo Cerquozzi
Michelangelo Cerquozzi, known as Michelangelo delle Battaglie (18 February 1602 – 6 April 1660) was an Italian Baroque painter known for his genre scenes, battle pictures, small religious and mythological works and still lifes. Michiel Sweerts
Michiel Sweerts or Michael Sweerts (29 September 1618 – 1 June 1664) was a Flemish painter and printmaker of the Baroque period, who is known for his allegorical and genre paintings, portraits and tronies. The artist led an itinerant life and worked in Rome, Brussels, Amsterdam, Persia and India ( Goa). While in Rome Sweerts became linked to the group of Dutch and Flemish painters of low-life scenes known as the ''Bamboccianti''. Jan Miel
Jan Miel (1599 in Beveren-Waas – April 1664 in Turin) was a Flemish painter and engraver who was active in Italy. He initially formed part of the circle of Dutch and Flemish genre painters in Rome who are referred to as the 'Bamboccianti' and were known for their scenes depicting the lower classes in Rome. He later developed away from the Bamboccianti style and painted history subjects in a classicising style. Johannes Lingelbach
Johannes (or Johann) Lingelbach (1622–1674) was a Dutch Golden Age painter, associated with the second generation of Bambocciate, a group of genre painters working in Rome from 1625–1700. Biography Lingelbach was born in Frankfurt, the son of David Lingelbach, a German technician, who in 1637 settled in Amsterdam with his wife and children. In 1638 the father hired and later established a labyrinth in the Jordaan. He furnished it with machines, that could move or play music and depicting biblical or mythological scenes. Lingelbach lived in Paris between 1642 and 1644, before returning to Amsterdam for several years. He moved to Rome in 1650 and lived there for six years before again returning to Amsterdam, where he remained and worked as painter for the rest of his life. Who instructed him is not known, but he may have been a pupil of Philips Wouwerman, as his works show an influence from Wouwerman's landscapes. Sébastien Bourdon (2 February 1616 – 8 May 1671) was a French painter and engraver. His ''chef d'œuvre'' is ''The Crucifixion of St. Peter'' made for the cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris, Notre Dame. Thomas Wijck
Thomas Wijck (also Thomas Wijk, or Thomas Wyck; 1616–1677) was a Dutch painter of port views and genre paintings. Biography Wijck was born into an artist family and received his training from his father. He journeyed to Italy, presumably by 1640, the year in which a ‘Tommaso fiammingo, pittore’ (Thomas the Fleming, painter) is documented as residing in Rome in the Via della Fontanella. Although this evidence of his residence in Rome around this time has been questioned, a number of his pictures depict scenes in and around Rome which would indicate a visit to the city at some point. Domenico Olivieri or Olivero (1679 in Turin – 1755 in Turin) was an Italian painter, who painted genre scenes influenced by the Flemish Bamboccianti painters. Biography He particularly excelled in painting droll scenes, fairs, and merry-makings. In the gallery of the court of Turin were two of his best pictures, in one of which he has represented a fair, with an immense assemblage of figures, of quack-doctors, and groups of peasants, sporting or quarrelling.
