Baltimore Clippers (1945–1949)
The Baltimore Clippers were a minor league professional ice hockey team from in Baltimore, Maryland, playing in the Eastern Amateur Hockey League at Carlin's Iceland. The team began play in the 1944–45 season known as the Baltimore Blades, and were renamed the Clippers from 1946 to 1949. The team name paid homage to local history in the Baltimore Clipper, and the Port of Baltimore. The Clippers ceased operations during the 1949–50 season. History The Baltimore Blades were founded in 1944 by the Jacobs brothers, who owned a military uniform supply company. The Blades replaced the void in the EAHL when the United States Coast Guard Cutters hockey team disbanded. Baltimore was affiliated with the Buffalo Bisons in the American Hockey League. Eddie Shore coached the parent team, and was also the Blades' general manager. Former Bison player Leroy Goldsworthy coached the Blades to a second-place finish in the EAHL. Norm Dussault
Joseph Normand "Ti-Nomme" Dussault (September 26, 1925 – August 28, 2012) was a professional ice hockey player who played 206 games in the National Hockey League. Dussault was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, where his father worked as an iceman. He moved to Sherbrooke, Quebec, when he was two years old. Dussault played for the Montreal Canadiens. Chick Webster
John Robert "Chick" Webster (November 3, 1920 – January 18, 2018) was a professional ice hockey player who played 14 games in the National Hockey League. Prior to this, he was a soldier in World War II. Biography Born in Toronto, Ontario, Webster played with the New York Rangers during the 1949-50 season. His brother, Don Webster, also played briefly in the NHL, appearing in 27 games for the Toronto Maple Leafs. During World War II, he was a forward observer and gunner for the 13th Field Regiment of the 3rd Canadian Division. He served in Germany, Holland, England, France and the North Sea. Webster lived in Richmond Hill, Ontario, during his time with the Stouffville Clippers in 1960s, and afterward lived in Mattawa, Ontario. After Milt Schmidt's death in January 2017, he became the oldest living former NHL player. His wife, Leona, died in 2009 of Alzheimer's disease. John Edward "Jack" Stoddard (September 26, 1926 – January 29, 2014) was born in Stoney Creek, Ontario and was a professional ice hockey player who played 80 games in the National Hockey League. He played with the New York Rangers. Stoddard died in Owen Sound in 2014. Playing career Initially, he played junior in the OHA between 1943 and 1946. Stanley "Stan" Smrke (September 2, 1928 — April 14, 1977) was a Yugoslavian-born Canadian ice hockey forward. He played 9 games in the National Hockey League with the Montreal Canadiens during the 1956–57 and 1957–58 seasons. The rest of his career, which lasted from 1947 to 1967, was spent in the minor leagues. Career Smrke started his National Hockey League career with the Montreal Canadiens in 1956. He was the first Yugoslavian-born player ever to play in the NHL. Smrke played his entire NHL career (9 games) with the Habs. Over his career, he scored a total of three assists before being dropped by the team. His final season in the NHL was the 1957–58 season.
