The Baltimore Canaries were a professional baseball club in the National Association from 1872 to 1874. History The team was usually listed as Lord Baltimore in the box scores of the day, and were also referred to as the Yellow Stockings. The canary and yellow stockings labels were in reference to their uniform colors. Though visually striking, the club's uniforms were not necessarily universally acclaimed. The Chicago ''Inter-Ocean'' reporter, covering a game staged in Chicago on May 29, 1872, described "the Baltimore nine, clad in yellow pants, white shirts, white hats, and ugly looking black and yellow stockings." The Canaries played their home games at Newington Park in Baltimore, Maryland. Newington Park was located on Pennsylvania Avenue in Baltimore city. They played under five different managers in their three seasons, winning 78 games and losing 79. The Baltimore Canaries played their first season in 1872 as a member of the National Association of Professional Base Ball Players. They finished second in the league with a record of 35–19. Outfielder Lip Pike led the NA in home runs, with 7, and runs batted in, with 60. Pitcher Bobby Mathews paced the circuit in strikeouts. Baltimore's other pitcher, Cherokee Fisher, led in earned run average. Several of the team's players were later suspended from baseball for fixing games; Bill Craver, George Hall, and Dick Higham were banned for life. Lip Pike
Lipman Emanuel "Lip" Pike (May 25, 1845 – October 10, 1893) the "Iron Batter", was an American who was one of the stars of 19th-century baseball in the United States. His brother, Israel Pike, played briefly for the Hartford Dark Blues during the season. Pike was one of professional baseball's first great sluggers, leading early professional professional leagues in home runs four times. Pike possessed "great speed, a powerful, if erratic, throwing arm, and enormous power." Pike was also the first Jewish baseball star and manager in America. The National Association of Professional Base Ball Players (NAPBBP), often known simply as the National Association (NA), was the first fully- professional sports league in baseball. Bobby Mathews
Robert T. Mathews (November 21, 1851 – April 17, 1898) was an American right-handed professional baseball pitcher who played in the National Association of Professional Base Ball Players, the National League of Major League Baseball and the American Association for twenty years beginning in the late 1860s. He is credited as being one of the inventors of the spitball pitch, which was rediscovered or reintroduced to the major leagues after he died. He is also credited with the first legal pitch which broke away from the batter. He is listed at 5 feet 5 inches tall and 140 pounds, which is small for a pro athlete even in his time, when the average height of an American male in the mid-19th century was 5 foot 7. Career Mathews was born in 1851, in Baltimore, Maryland, and he played as a teenager with the Maryland club of that city, and he made the team a dangerous one. Candy Cummings
William Arthur "Candy" Cummings (October 18, 1848 – May 17, 1924) was an American professional baseball player. He played as a pitcher in the National Association and National League. Cummings is widely credited with inventing the curveball. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939. Early life Cummings was born in Ware, Massachusetts. He later said that he thought of the idea of the curveball when fooling around with clam shells as a teenager in Ware. He played baseball while attending Falley Seminary in Fulton, New York. At the age of 17, Cummings made his baseball debut in the National Association of Base Ball Players with the Excelsior baseball club of Brooklyn. His first game with the team was on August 14, 1866, against the New York Mutuals. Ten days later he led his team to a 242 win against the Newark Eurekas.
