Balog (genus)
Balog or Balogh was a medieval family or clan (Latin '' generatio'') of Hungarian nobles which is believed to have been founded by the German knight Altmann von Friedberg, somewhat around 1046, when he settled in the Kingdom of Hungary. The family branches spread over time all throughout the Kingdom of Hungary and within the Austrian Empire and Austro-Hungarian Monarchy during the centuries. Paul Balog, Bishop Of Pécs
Paul from the kindred Balog ( hu, Balog nembeli Pál) was the bishop of Pécs in the Kingdom of Hungary between 1293 and 1306. He studied in the University of Bologna and achieved a doctorate in law. Paul returned to Hungary with a library worthing 1,000 marks, but his books were annihilated in the course of a civil war in 1276. His superiors, including King Ladislaus IV of Hungary often sent him to Rome in order to represent their interests at the Holy See. Although he administered the vacant see of Pécs from 1287, he was only consecrated bishop in 1293. Initially, he supported King Andrew III of Hungary, but after the king's death he joined Prince Charles of Naples, the claimant supported by Pope Benedict VIII to the Hungarian throne. Henry Balog
Henry from the kindred Balog ( hu, Balog nembeli Henrik; died after 1300) was a Hungarian nobleman in the late 14th century. He was a councillor of King Andrew III of Hungary during the last years of his reign. Life Henry was born into the Atyfi (Adfi, Othfi) branch of the ''gens'' (clan) Balog of German origin, which settled in the Kingdom of Hungary in the 11th century. His father was Oth. Henry had two brothers, Nicholas and Conrad. The latter was ancestor of the Atyfi de Balog and the Uza de Panyit noble families. Henry had a son John, who appeared in contemporary records between 1323 and 1331. Paul from the kindred Balog ( hu, Balog nembeli Pál; died between January and March 1275) was a Hungarian prelate in the 13th century, who served as Bishop of Veszprém from 1263 until his death. Simultaneously, he also held various positions in the royal court. Ancestry Paul was born around 1227. His parentage is unknown. He had two brothers, including Benedict, who served as ''ispán'' of Veszprém County in 1269. He was called Benedict of Árma in 1266, after his ownership of a village in Bars County (present-day an uninhabited waste in Málaš, Slovakia). Paul's another, unidentified brother was the father of his namesake nephew, who was elevated into the dignity of Bishop of Pécs at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries.
