Ballinakill GAA
Ballinakill GAA is a hurling and Gaelic football club in Ballinakill, County Laois, Ireland. The club colours are maroon and white and the club grounds are in Ballinakill village near the border with County Kilkenny. History In 1888, the Ballinakill club won the first ever Laois Senior Football Championship but these days the club is more renowned as a hurling heartland. After two final defeats in 1941 and 1966, Ballinakill won its first ever hurling title in 1969 when they defeated Kyle in the final 2-7 to 1-5 to win the Laois Junior Hurling Championship. For the following four years, Ballinakill was defeated in four successive Laois Intermediate Hurling Championship finals before defeating Durrow in the 1974 final to qualify for senior ranks. Hurling
Hurling ( ga, iománaíocht, ') is an outdoor team game of ancient Gaelic Irish origin, played by men. One of Ireland's native Gaelic games, it shares a number of features with Gaelic football, such as the field and goals, the number of players and much terminology. The same game played by women is called camogie ('), which shares a common Gaelic root. The objective of the game is for players to use an ash wood stick called a hurley (in Irish a ', pronounced or ) to hit a small ball called a ' between the opponent's goalposts either over the crossbar for one point or under the crossbar into a net guarded by a goalkeeper for three points. Gaelic Football
Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). In the game, two types of scores are possible: points and goals. A point is awarded for kicking or hand-passing the ball over the crossbar , signalled by the umpire raising a white flag. Ballinakill
Ballinakill () is a small village in County Laois, Ireland on the R432 regional road between Abbeyleix, Ballyragget and Castlecomer, County Kilkenny. As of the 2016 census, there were 445 people living in Ballinakill. History From 1613 until the Act of Union, the town was a parliamentary borough, electing two members to the Irish House of Commons. The town was besieged and plundered by Irish rebels, including the Earl of Castlehaven and Lord Mountgarret, during the 1641 rebellion. When the castle and town surrendered much was robbed, including cattle, sheep and cloth. Remarkably, this information survives to us through an account from a native American Patagonian from present day southern Argentina/Chile 'but now a Christian' who had been a servant to Captain Richard Steele for twenty years and lived in Ballinakill. The Laois County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association has organised it since 1888. Portarlington are the title holders (2022) defeating O'Dempsey's in the Final. The Harps GAA
The Harps GAA is a hurling, Gaelic football and camogie club in County Laois, Ireland. It is a combination of players from the villages of Cullohill and Durrow. Hurling and camogie are the dominant sports in the club but, the club also fields football teams. The club colours are yellow with red trim, and its grounds are in Durrow and Cullohill. History The club was formed in 1984 as an amalgamation of the old clubs of Durrow and Cullohill. In their very first year, the club reached the Laois Senior Hurling Championship final but lost to Portlaoise in a replay. Crettyard GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association gaelic football club in Crettyard near Newtown in County Laois, Ireland. The club is located near the Laois-Kilkenny border. History Shortly after the GAA was founded in 1884, there were two clubs in the area: Mayo "Die Hards" and Newtown "sons of Erin". According to ''The Nationalist and Leinster Times'', Newtown played a football game against Modubeagh in 1888, Mayo also played a match against Modubeagh in the Arles club tournament in 1889. An R.I.C. special branch report on the G.A.A. in Queens County in 1890, stated that the Mayo and Newtown clubs were both affiliated. St Joseph's GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association Gaelic football club in County Laois, Republic of Ireland, Ireland. It won nine Laois Senior Football Championship titles between 1973 and 2000. The club colours are yellow with blue trim and the main club grounds are located at Kellyville with a secondary grounds at Milltown.
