Sarah McLeod (Ballenden)
Sarah McLeod (1818 – 23 December 1853) is notable in the history of Canada for being involved in a defamation case, the Foss-Pelly scandal. Early life Sarah was born in Rupert's Land, i.e. the Hudson Bay drainage basin, part of British North America deeply involved in the fur trade. She was one of eight children of Alexander Roderick McLeod, chief trader for the Hudson's Bay Company, and a mixed-blood mother (see Marriage 'à la façon du pays' and Anglo-Métis). She grew up at trading posts in the Mackenzie River and Columbia areas. She was sent to the Red River Colony (now part of Manitoba) to receive a formal education. At Red River she met John Ballenden, a newly appointed Scottish accountant at Upper Fort Garry, whom she married in 1836. John Ballenden
John Ballenden ( – 7 December 1856) was one of the Scottish fur traders that the Hudson’s Bay Company recruited to administer that trade in North America. Ballenden started as an apprentice at York Factory, Rupert's Land in 1829 and was named accountant at Upper Fort Garry in 1836. He married Sarah McLeod, the daughter of Alexander Roderick McLeod, chief trader with the HBC, in a mixed marriage that was still common among the traders at the time. Through a number of career moves, Ballenden became a chief factor with the company. His mixed marriage created a number of hardships for the family and led to his taking furlough and a reposting. William Ballenden
William Ballantine (also Ballentine, Bannatine, Ballantyne, Ballentyne, Ballenden, Bellenden) (1616/1618 – 1661) was a Roman Catholic priest who became the first Prefect of Scotland. Life Ballantine was a native of Douglas, Lanarkshire, the parish of which his father was the minister. His paternal uncle was a lord of session, with the title of Lord Newhall. He studied at the University of Edinburgh, and later travelled on the continent. At Paris, he was converted to the Catholic religion. He entered the Scotch College, Rome, where he took the oath on 1 November 1641, and for the next five years he studied philosophy and theology. In consequence of his delicate health, he was ordained a priest earlier than usual, on 3 December 1645. Having received the order of priesthood, he left the Scots College on 15 March 1646 and then stayed in the Scotch college at Paris, preparing himself for the mission. Ballantine is a surname of Scottish Gaelic origin. It is first found in Lanarkshire, where the family had been settled since ancient times. The name has also been variously spelled Ballantyne, Bannatyne, Ballanden, and Ballentine. Ballandean is a rural town and locality in the Southern Downs Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , the locality of Ballandean had a population of 338 people. Ballandean is in the Granite Belt Region of the Southern Downs. It is on the Queensland border with New South Wales. The town has a number of nearby vineyards which attracted tourists to the area. Geography The Severn River marks part of the northern boundary. Kelvin Grove Creek, Washpool Creek, Accommodation Creek and Smiths Creek all flow through Ballandean into the Severn River. The New England Highway passes through Ballandean from north to south in the north-east of Ballandean in close parallel to the Southern railway line.
