Ballarat Football Club
The Ballarat Football Netball Club is an Australian rules football and netball club. The football squad currently competes in the Ballarat Football League in the Ballarat region of Victoria, Australia. The Ballarat Football Netball Club was established on 20 May 1860, making it the 3rd oldest continually operating football club in Australia, behind Melbourne FC (May 1859), and Geelong FC (July 1859). History Its first President and Captain was Lieutenant Colonel Alexander M. Greenfield. Its senior best and fairest award is named after Alexander Greenfield. Ballarat played their home matches at City Oval in Ballarat for 88 years, then moved to their current location at Alfredton Recreation Reserve in 1994. Sophie Van De Heuvel
Sophie Van De Heuvel (born 10 December 2000) is an Australian rules footballer playing for the Essendon Football Club in the AFL Women's (AFLW). A cricketer as well as a footballer, she competed in both sports at the national level in her junior career. Van De Heuvel was the second selection in the 2018 AFL Women's draft and debuted in the opening round of the 2019 AFL Women's season. John Birt
John Birt, Baron Birt (born 10 December 1944) is a British television executive and businessman. He is a former Director-General (1992–2000) of the BBC. After a successful career in commercial television, initially at Granada Television and later at London Weekend Television, Birt was appointed Deputy Director-General of the BBC in 1987 for his expertise in current affairs. The forced departure of Director-General Alasdair Milne after pressure from the Thatcher government required someone near the top, preferably from outside the BBC, with editorial and production experience (Milne had been summarily replaced by Michael Checkland, an accountant). Percy Beames
Percy James Beames (27 July 1911 – 28 March 2004) was an Australian sportsman who played Australian rules football for the Melbourne Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL) as well as first-class cricket for Victoria in the Sheffield Shield. He later became one of Melbourne's most distinguished sports journalists, covering cricket and Australian rules football for ''The Age'' until 1976. When the Australian Football Hall of Fame was established in 1996, Beames was among the inaugural inductees, and was also named in the forward pocket when Melbourne's Team of the Century was named in June 2000. David Shaw (Australian Footballer)
David Shaw (born 29 October 1938, in Ballarat) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Essendon Football Club, Essendon in the Australian Football League, VFL during the 1960s. University Blues recruit David Shaw was a versatile player and made his senior debut in 1959. He played in four Grand Finals with Essendon over the course of his career, winning in 1962 and 1965. Geoff Tunbridge
Geoff R. Tunbridge (7 April 1932 – 23 March 2015) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Melbourne Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). At the age of 25, Tunbridge was recruited to Melbourne from Ballarat, where he was an Old Boy (from 1949) and teacher at Ballarat Church of England Boys Grammar School. His jumper was number 23 and he was a red-headed, spearing left-foot flanker. He originally commenced his footy career for University Blues in the Victorian Amateur Football Association. Mick Twomey
Michael John Twomey (25 September 1931 – 14 December 2015) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Collingwood Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). At 185cm (6'1") in height, Collingwood's Mick Twomey was taller than his brothers Bill and Pat. Recruited from Yarra Valley, he played most of his 157 VFL games between 1951 and 1961 as a ruckman. In fact he was short for a ruckman; but he had remarkable spring, and newspapers often carried photos of him seeming to soar over opponents. Dave Duff
David E. Duff (15 June 1901 – 31 December 1977) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Although he spent just one season at Melbourne, Duff was a member of a premiership team. He kicked a season best seven goals against Hawthorn at Glenferrie Oval in round 18 and continued his form in the finals with three goals in both the semi final and preliminary final wins. In the 1926 VFL Grand Final he was Melbourne's full-forward and managed two goals. Duff then became a prolific goal-kicker for Ballarat and in 1927, his first year, set a Ballarat Football League record tally of 113 goals. Don Discher (born 17 April 1954) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with St Kilda in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Discher was a ruckman, who came down to St Kilda from Ballarat. He played his first league game in the opening round of the 1978 VFL season, against Fitzroy, but didn't feature again for the rest of the year. He missed four games through suspension in 1979, two each for striking Collingwood's Peter Moore and Terry Wight. Despite this he was still able to appear in 11 games for St Kilda in 1979. The Redan Football Netball Club (nicknamed the ''Lions'') is an Australian rules football and netball club located in the city of Ballarat, Victoria. The football team currently competes in the Ballarat Football League. Redan has a history of 59 Premierships including 11 Senior Football Premierships and was named the Victorian Country Football League Most Disciplined Club in 2004 & 2005. Lake Wendouree
Lake Wendouree () is an artificially created and maintained shallow urban lake located adjacent to the suburb of the same name in the city of Ballarat, Victoria, Australia. The name Wendouree comes from a local Aboriginal word ''wendaaree'' which means 'go away': a story is told that when settler William Cross Yuille asked a local Indigenous woman what the name of the swamp was, that was her reply. Location and features Lake Wendouree is one of the smallest of a complex of natural wetlands which includes nearby Lake Burrumbeet and Lake Learmonth on the plains of the Central Highlands.
