The Ballaghaderreen branch line connected Ballaghaderreen railway station to Kilfree Junction railway station, Kilfree Junction on the Dublin to Sligo Mac Diarmada railway station, Sligo main line. It opened in 1874 and closed in 1963. History The Sligo & Ballaghaderreen Junction Railway (S&BJR) was incorporated in 1863 with the purpose of connecting the village of Ballaghaderreen to the newly opened extension of the Midland Great Western Railway (MGWR) from Longford to Sligo. The line opened in 1874 and was operated by the MGWR. Although costing £80,000 to build, it was sold to the Midland Great Western Railway#Branch lines, MGWR for £24,000 in 1877, after spending time under the administration of creditors due to non-payment of debts Of this, £13,300 went to the Board of Works to repay its loan and the balance to the Consett Iron Company – leaving the original shareholders with nothing."G. Lough Gara
Lough Gara () is a lake in Counties Sligo and Roscommon, Ireland. It is an Important Bird Area protecting 1,788 ha of which most (1,742 ha) is covered by a Ramsar Site. History Lough Gara was known in ancient times as Loch Techet, but the O’Garas, during their ownership of the Coolavin district from about the thirteenth century, renamed the lake "Loch Uí Ghadhra". The first documented reference appeared in 1285. Even though the family lost control of all their Coolavin townlands about 1650, their name has remained on the lake to the present day. The area around Lough Gara is referred to as "O'Gara heartland". Location and size Lough Gara is situated mainly in south County Sligo with a smaller part of the lake in County Roscommon. The Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC, ga, Constáblacht Ríoga na hÉireann; simply called the Irish Constabulary 1836–67) was the police force in Ireland from 1822 until 1922, when all of the country was part of the United Kingdom. Irish War Of Independence
The Irish War of Independence () or Anglo-Irish War was a guerrilla war fought in Ireland from 1919 to 1921 between the Irish Republican Army (IRA, the army of the Irish Republic) and British forces: the British Army, along with the quasi-military Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) and its paramilitary forces the Auxiliaries and Ulster Special Constabulary (USC). MGWR Classes L And Lm
The MGWR Class L/Lm/Ln were Midland Great Western Railway (MGWR) 0-6-0 locomotives. Following merger of the MGWR into the Great Southern Railways (GSR) in 1925 these locomotives still generally kept to their former area, as did the equivalent GS&WR Class 101 ''standard goods'' to their former area. Whereas Class 101 was noted for some working of branch line passenger trains this was less likely for the MGWR class L; however they were noted for passenger mixed working on the Clifden and Ballaghaderreen branch lines. Class L MGWR Class L became GSR Class 594 or J19. The first orders were made from R. Stephenson in 1875, the order subsequently being increased to 10 and all were delivered in 1876. A further 18 were built between 1886 and 1889. The original 10 were rebuilt as class Lm between 1893 and 1895. MGWR Class K
The MGWR Class K was a Midland Great Western Railway (MGWR) designed by Martin Atock for passenger work and introduced from 1893. They replaced earlier MGWR Class D locomotives that carried the same namesand numbers. The class was also known as the Great Southern Railways (GSR) 650 G2 class. MGWR Class E
The MGWR class E was a small 0-6-0T steam locomotive class designed in 1891 by Martin Atock, the then locomotive superintendent of the Midland Great Western Railway (MGWR) and twelve engines were built. After the MGWR was merged into Great Southern Railways (GSR) in 1925 they were designated Class 551 or J26. They were also known as the ''Irish Terrier'' class. MGWR Class 6
The Midland Great Western Railway (MGWR) Classes 6, 8, 10, 11, 17 and 18 were locomotives introduced in the period 1852-1870. The 22 locomotives were spread across 6 different manufacturers and all were withdrawn in the decade between 1880 and 1890 though some donated parts to other builds at Broadstone Works. William Fairbairn & Sons
William Fairbairn and Sons, was an engineering works in Manchester, England. History William Fairbairn opened an iron foundry in 1816 and was joined the following year by a Mr. Lillie, and the firm became known as Fairbairn and Lillie Engine Makers, producing iron steamboats. Their foundry and millwrighting factory burned down on 6 August 1831 with damage estimated at £8,000. The business survived this event. Shipbuilding In 1830, they built the iron paddle-steamer ''Lord Dundas'', for use on the Forth and Clyde Canal. She proved so successful that the firm built eight more of a larger size within the next two or three years for Scottish canals, two passenger-boats with 40 horsepower engines for the Humber and two for the lakes of Zurich and Walenstadt in Switzerland, which, after being tried, were sent out dismantled.

CIÉ 2600 Class
The Córas Iompair Éireann (CIÉ) 2600 Class were Associated Equipment Company (AEC)–engined diesel multiple units (normally termed railcars in Ireland) that operated InterCity and suburban services on the CIÉ system between 1952 and 1975. Many were later converted for push–pull operation with diesel locomotives, finally being withdrawn when displaced by the electric Dublin Area Rapid Transit service in the mid-1980s. The Córas Iompair Éireann 121 Class was a railway locomotive which was manufactured by General Motors Electro-Motive Division. These locomotives were in regular service on the Irish railway network until 2002, with the last two remaining in service until 2008. The Emergency ( ga, Ré na Práinne / An Éigeandáil) was a state of emergency in Ireland in the Second World War, throughout which Ireland remained neutral.
