Baleia State Park
The Baleia State Park ( pt, Parque Estadual da Baleia) is a state park in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. It protects a rugged area in the cerrado biome near the state capital of Belo Horizonte. As of 2014 nothing had been done to implement the park, which existed only on paper. Location The Baleia State Park is in the city of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. It has an area of . The park is in the Taquaril neighborhood of the city. It is at the foot of the Serra do Curral, about from the city center. The area has six springs that supply the population of the Serra neighborhood in Belo Horizonte. History A Botanical Garden was defined in the area by decree 10.232 of 1932 with the objective of preserving the vegetation and landscape of Belo Horizonte. This would be the first conservation unit in the city and one of the first in the state and the country. However, nothing was done to implement it. A state park ( pt, Parque Estadual) in Brazil is a legally defined type of protected area operated by one of the states. Their goal is to preserve important or beautiful natural ecosystems. Public access is allowed subject to regulations defined by the responsible agency. Definition State parks fall under the same regulations as national parks, defined by law 9.985 of July 2000. The park's basic objective is preservation of natural ecosystems of great ecological relevance and scenic beauty. This enables the conduct of scientific research and the development of educational activities and environmental interpretation, recreation in contact with nature and eco tourism. The park is publicly owned, and private areas included in its limits will be expropriated when it is established. Cerrado
The ''Cerrado'' (, ) is a vast ecoregion of tropical savanna in eastern Brazil, particularly in the states of Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso, Tocantins, Minas Gerais, and the Federal District. The core areas of the Cerrado biome are the Brazilian highlands – the ''Planalto''. White-rumped Tanager
The white-rumped tanager (''Cypsnagra hirundinacea'') is a South American bird in the tanager family Thraupidae. It is the only member of the genus ''Cypsnagra''. The length is 16 cm with a weight of 25-34 g. They occur mostly in Brazil, also in Paraguay, Bolivia and Suriname at an elevation of 700–1000 m. They inhabit grasslands with few trees. In Brazil they are found in territorial groups of three to six individuals. They eat insects on the ground in the grass or catch them in flight (sallying). Their diet mostly consists of beetles, crickets and grasshoppers but they occasionally eat fruit. The cup shaped nests are placed only 1–2 metres off the ground and are made of woven grasses. Blue Finch
The blue finch or yellow-billed blue finch (''Porphyrospiza caerulescens'') is a species of small bird. Although it was long classified in the bunting family Emberizidae, or the cardinal family Cardinalidae, more recent molecular studies have shown it fits comfortably in the Thraupini tribe within the family Thraupidae. It is found in Brazil and northeastern Bolivia, where its natural habitat is dry savanna. It is becoming rare due to habitat loss. Swallow-tailed Cotinga
The swallow-tailed cotinga (''Phibalura flavirostris'') is a species of passerine bird in the family Cotingidae. It is the only member of the genus ''Phibalura''. The nominate subspecies (''P. f. flavirostris'') are found in the Atlantic forest in south-eastern Brazil, eastern Paraguay and Argentina (Misiones only). The subspecies ''P. f. boliviana'', which only was rediscovered in 2000 (after 98 years without any records), is restricted to the vicinity of Apolo in Bolivia. Both populations are threatened by habitat loss.
