Bajram Begaj
Bajram Begaj (born 20 March 1967) is an Albanian retired military officer and politician, who is currently serving as the 9th President of Albania since 24 July 2022. Begaj, who has had a long career in the Albanian army, served as the 26th Chief of General Staff of the Albanian Armed Forces from July 2020 to June 2022. Although he is politically independent, on 3 June 2022 Begaj was officially nominated by the governing Socialist Party as the candidate to the fourth round of the 2022 presidential election. Begaj is the fifth president in the history of Albania to have a military background, after Ahmet Zogu, Ramiz Alia, Alfred Moisiu and Bujar Nishani. 2022 Albanian Presidential Election
Indirect presidential elections have taken place in Albania from 16 May 2022 to 4 June 2022. It was the ninth presidential election since 1991 and the collapse of the communist regime. The first round was held on 16 May 2022, and failed due to all parties failing to agree on a candidate. The second and third rounds held on 23 and 30 May failed for the same reason. Bajram Begaj, 26th Chief of General Staff of the Albanian Armed Forces, was elected president on the fourth round, with 95,12% of votes. Background The incumbent President of Albania, Ilir Meta, took office on 24 July 2017 and his term is due to end on 24 July 2022. Brdo-Brijuni Process
The Brdo-Brijuni Process ( sl, Proces Brdo-Brioni) is an annual multilateral event in the Western Balkans. It was initiated in 2013 by Slovenian president Borut Pahor and Croatian president Ivo Josipović. The first official meeting was in Brdo pri Kranju, Slovenia. The main focus of the Process is the enlargement of the European Union with countries of the Western Balkans. Similar meetings were held at the prime-ministerial level in 2010 and 2011 by then-Prime Ministers of Slovenia and Croatia, Borut Pahor and Jadranka Kosor. The Brdo-Brijuni process includes Slovenia and Croatia ( EU member states) and candidates and potential candidates for EU membership from the Western Balkans (Serbia, Montenegro, Albania, North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo). Kranj (, german: Krainburg) is the third-largest city in Slovenia, with a population of 37,941 (2020). It is located approximately northwest of Ljubljana. Bujar Nishani (; 29 September 1966 – 28 May 2022) was an Albanian politician. He served as President of Albania from 24 July 2012 to 24 July 2017. Nishani was the youngest person to have been chosen as president of Albania, taking office at the age of 45.
