Baishatuo Yangtze River Railway Bridge
The Baishatuo Yangtze River Railway Bridge () is a truss bridge across the Yangtze River between the Jiangjin District and the Dadukou District of Chongqing, China. The bridge carries two tracks of the Chongqing-Guiyang Railway. Completed in 1960, the bridge was the first bridge over the Yangtze River in Chongqing and only the second bridge along the main stretch of the river between Yibin and the river mouth in Shanghai. Only the Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge, completed in 1957, pre-dates the Baishatuo Railway Bridge. There are now over 50 bridges which cross the river downstream of the Baishatuo Railway Bridge. It was closed on 24 April 2019 and replaced by the New Baishatuo Yangtze River Railway Bridge, which is a six-track cable-stayed bridge, with four tracks for passenger operations on its upper deck and two tracks for freight operations on its lower deck. The old bridge is to be demolished because it is considered too low as the water level is to be raised by a dam. See a ...

Bridges Over The Yangtze River
A bridge is a structure built to span a physical obstacle (such as a body of water, valley, road, or rail) without blocking the way underneath. It is constructed for the purpose of providing passage over the obstacle, which is usually something that is otherwise difficult or impossible to cross. There are many different designs of bridges, each serving a particular purpose and applicable to different situations. Designs of bridges vary depending on factors such as the function of the bridge, the nature of the terrain where the bridge is constructed and anchored, and the material used to make it, and the funds available to build it. The earliest bridges were likely made with fallen trees and stepping stones. The Neolithic people built boardwalk bridges across marshland. The Arkadiko Bridge (dating from the 13th century BC, in the Peloponnese) is one of the oldest arch bridges still in existence and use. Etymology The ''Oxford English Dictionary'' traces the origin of the wo ...

Yangtze River Bridges And Tunnels
The bridges and tunnels across the Yangtze River carry rail and road traffic across China's longest and largest river and form a vital part of the country's transportation infrastructure. The river bisects China proper from west to east, and every major north–south bound highway and railway must cross the Yangtze. Large urban centers along the river such as Chongqing, Wuhan, and Nanjing also have urban mass transit rail lines crossing the Yangtze. Pontoon bridges have been used by militaries for two thousand years on the Yangtze, but until the completion of the Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge in 1957, there were no permanent bridges along the main stretch of the river known as ''Chang Jiang'' (the " Long River"), from Yibin to the river mouth in Shanghai, a distance of . Since then, over 75 bridges and six tunnels have been built over this stretch, the overwhelming majority since 1990. They reflect a broad array of bridge designs and, in many cases, represent significant achieve ...

Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge
The Wuhan Yangtze Great Bridge (), commonly known as Wuhan First Yangtze Bridge, is a double-deck road and rail bridge across the Yangtze River in Wuhan, in Central China. At its completion in 1957, the bridge was the easternmost crossing of the Yangtze, and was often referred to as the "First Bridge of the Yangtze". The bridge extends 1.6 kilometers (1 mile) from Turtle Hill in Hanyang, on the northern bank of the Yangtze, to Snake Hill in Wuchang, on the southern bank of the Yangtze. Plans for the bridge's construction were first made in 1910. A total of four exploratory surveys were made between 1913 and 1948 to identify a suitable site, but economic limitations and the combination of World War II and the Chinese Civil War prevented the bridge's building until the 1950s. Actual construction began in September 1955 and was completed in October 1957. The upper level of the bridge is a two-way, four-lane automobile highway. The lower level is a double-track railway on the ...
