Badminton Association of Thailand (BAT, th, สมาคมแบดมินตันแห่งประเทศไทย), officially known as Badminton Association of Thailand Under Royal Patronage of His Majesty the King ( th, สมาคมแบดมินตันแห่งประเทศไทย ในพระบรมราชูปถัมภ์) is the national governing body for the sport of badminton in Thailand. As of January 2019, there are 52 affiliated clubs and 304 associate member clubs across the country. History The association was founded by four badminton enthusiasts in Thailand in 1950 and joined the International Badminton Federation a year later. It was awarded royal patronage in 1954 by King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who was also an avid badminton player. Korn Dabbaransi ( th, กร ทัพพะรังสี, , alternatively transcribed as Thapparangsi or ''Dabaransi'', ; born 14 September 1945) is a Thai politician. He was the leader of the National Development Party from 1998 to 2003. Korn served as deputy prime minister and as a cabinet minister in several governments. Badminton In Thailand
Badminton is a racquet sport played using racquets to hit a shuttlecock across a net. Although it may be played with larger teams, the most common forms of the game are "singles" (with one player per side) and "doubles" (with two players per side). Badminton is often played as a casual outdoor activity in a yard or on a beach; formal games are played on a rectangular indoor court. Points are scored by striking the shuttlecock with the racquet and landing it within the opposing side's half of the court. Each side may only strike the shuttlecock once before it passes over the net. Play ends once the shuttlecock has struck the floor or if a fault has been called by the umpire, service judge, or (in their absence) the opposing side. The shuttlecock is a feathered or (in informal matches) plastic projectile which flies differently from the balls used in many other sports. Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya ( th, สิริวัณณวรี นารีรัตนราชกัญญา; ; ; born 8 January 1987) is a Princess of the Kingdom of Thailand and is the only daughter of King Vajiralongkorn by his former consort Sujarinee Vivacharawongse (commonly known as Yuvadhida Polpraserth). Thailand Masters (badminton)
The Thailand Masters is an international badminton tournament held starting from 2016. The tournament is launched to honor Princess Sirivannavari, who was a former badminton player. Currently, the level of the tournament is BWF World Tour Super 300, replacing the older structure of Grand Prix Gold. The first tournament was held in Bangkok and offered a total prize money of US$120,000, until 2018 it increased to US$150,000. Charoen Wattanasin () (born 1937) is a former badminton player from Thailand who won international championships in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Career Between 1958 and 1962 Wattanasin captured the open men's singles titles of Malaya, Ireland, Scotland, Norway, and France. He also shared the open men's doubles titles of Malaya, Scotland, the Netherlands, and the USA. Wattanasin was a men's singles runner-up to Denmark's formidable Erland Kops at the All-England Championships in 1960 and 1962. He represented Thailand in the Thomas Cup (men's international team) campaigns of 1957-1958 and 1963-1964. Corruption scandal In 2000 he was inducted into the World Badminton Hall of Fame. International Badminton Federation
The Badminton World Federation (BWF) is the international governing body for the sport of badminton recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). It was founded in 1934 as the International Badminton Federation (IBF) with nine member nations (Canada, Denmark, England, France, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Scotland and Wales). In 1981 the IBF merged with the World Badminton Federation, and on 24 September 2006, at the Extraordinary General Meeting in Madrid, the name of the organization was changed to Badminton World Federation (BWF).
