Backesto Park
Backesto Park is a park in San Jose, California, in the Northside neighborhood. History Backesto Park is named after John Pierre Backesto (1831-1890), a prominent San Jose physician in 1800s. In 1890, after John Pierre's death, his widow, Anne Backesto, donated $30,000 to San Jose in order to found a park in his memory. Backesto Park is home to a tiled memorial fountain to the Backesto family, installed in 1922, which is the oldest structure still in existence made by the Solon and Schemmel Tile Company, the famed Californian tile producer. In 2017, the park's tennis courts were renamed in honor of Don Johnson, a San Jose community leader and tennis coach. Location Backesto Park is located in the Northside neighborhood. Northside is a historic neighborhood of Central San Jose, California, immediately north of Downtown San Jose. It borders Japantown to its west. History Northside is a historic turn-of-the-century neighborhood, made up of various styles, especially Spanish Colonial Revival and Queen Anne style architecture. Solon and Schemmel Tile Company (S&S) was a tile pottery business in San Jose, California from 1920 – 1936. The company's tiles adorn Steinhart Aquarium in San Francisco and the Hearst Castle in San Simeon, California. Other projects included tiles for the Orpheum and Junior Orpheum theaters in Los Angeles, the Mark Hopkins Hotel, Central Classroom Building at San Jose State University, Y.M.C.A. buildings in San Diego and Honolulu, the Dollar Steamship Line building at Portland, Oregon, the Oakland and Berkeley war memorials. and the Frank P. Japantown (Japanese: 日本町; ''Nihonmachi''), commonly known as J Town, is a historic cultural district of San Jose, California, north of Downtown San Jose. Historically a center for San Jose's Japanese American and Chinese American communities, San Jose's Japantown is one of only three Japantowns that still exist in the United States, alongside San Francisco's Japantown and Los Angeles's Little Tokyo.
