The BMW E24 is the first generation of BMW 6 Series range of grand tourer cars, which was produced from January 1976 to 1989 and replaced the BMW E9 coupé. The E24 was produced solely in a 2-door coupé body style. All models used petrol straight-six engines, with the majority (aside from the M635CSi/M6 model) using a version of the BMW M30 engine family. The E24 was initially based on the BMW 5 Series (E12), E12 5 Series platform, until it switched to the newly released BMW 5 Series (E28), E28 5 Series platform in 1982. The M635CSi is the first of the BMW M6 model line and is powered by the BMW M88#Versions, M88/3 straight-six engine. In North America, the vehicle is badged as "M6" and uses the less powerful BMW S38 engine. The E24's successor, the BMW 6 Series (E63), E63 6 Series, was released in 2004 after a 16-year hiatus. A grand tourer (GT) is a type of car that is designed for high speed and long-distance driving, due to a combination of performance and luxury attributes. The most common format is a Front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout, front-engine, rear-wheel-drive two-door coupé with either a two-seat or a 2+2 (car body style), 2+2 arrangement. Grand tourers are most often the coupé derivative of Luxury vehicle, luxury saloon (car), saloons or sedans. The term is a near-calque from the Italian language phrase ''gran turismo'' which became popular in the English language from the 1950s, evolving from fast touring cars and Streamliner, streamlined closed sports cars during the 1930s.
