BFCS was a commercial film production company. History Bob Brooks, a Creative Group Head with Benton & Bowles Inc, New York, came to London in 1961 as Co-Creative Director for Benton & Bowles Ltd. He left the agency in 1963 to open a photographic studio in London. "Art directors were used to working with the top photographers in town, getting a certain kind of light, a particular attention to detail. However, feature film-makers were the main directors and they couldn’t give a damn what a plate of soup looked like, or bread, or an egg, or any of the textural things that made that kind of advertising so outstanding. Bob Brooks
Bob Brooks (26 December 1927 – September 2012) was an American film director, photographer and advertising creative. He created numerous advertising campaigns, directed several thousand TV commercials in the UK, US and Europe, and directed two feature films. Brooks was a founding partner of BFCS, an influential British film production company, and one of the founders of Design and Art Direction (D&AD). He was acclaimed within his lifetime, with numerous international awards. Early life After graduating Penn State University in 1950, Brooks arrived in New York in 1953 as an Efficiency Expert for the US Government. Smash Martians
The Smash Martians were the stars of a series of 1970s and early 1980s TV advertising campaigns for Smash instant mashed potato in the UK. They were a family of Martian robots who would watch humans laboriously preparing mashed potato the traditional way on TV. The robots would then mock what they saw by chortling as they heard how the "Earth people peeled their own potatoes with their metal knives, boiled them for twenty of their minutes, then smashed them all to bits" – instead of using Smash instant mash. The voices were by Peter Hawkins. The catchphrase 'For Mash Get Smash' is still an iconic advertising slogan in the UK.
