BC Sukhumi
BC Sukhumi ( ka, ს.კ. სოხუმი) is a professional basketball club from the city of Sukhumi, that plays in the Georgian Superliga. The club is currently based in Tbilisi. History The club was established in 1991 in Sukhumi. Shortly afterwards, the War in Abkhazia forced the team to leave their home city, and relocate to the Georgian capital. Nevertheless, they managed to complete the 1992-93 season, and have been playing in Tbilisi ever since. The club has played under several names over the years ("Sukhumi-91," "Kolkha," "SSU" and, since 2009, as "Sukhumi"). Their best result in the league is 4th place, which they achieved in 2011 and 2012. In 2011, Sukhumi represented Georgia in the EuroChallenge tournament, but failed to progress through the qualifying round. For much of its existence, the team has been coached by Vazha Kvaratskhelia. The Georgian Basketball Super League ( ka, საკალათბურთო სუპერლიგა, Sakalatburto Superliga), also known as the Georgian Top League, is the highest professional basketball league in Georgia (country), Georgia. The first season was played in 1991, and was won by BC Dinamo Tbilisi, Dinamo Tbilisi. The 1990s were dominated by BC Vita Tbilisi, who won the title a record 7 times. BC Batumi, and then Energy Invest Rustavi, dominated the following decade. Sukhumi
Sukhumi (russian: Суху́м(и), ) or Sokhumi ( ka, სოხუმი, ), also known by its Abkhaz name Aqwa ( ab, Аҟәа, ''Aqwa''), is a city in a wide bay on the Black Sea's eastern coast. It is both the capital and largest city of the Republic of Abkhazia, which has controlled it since the Abkhazia war in 1992–93. However, internationally Abkhazia is considered part of Georgia. The city, which has an airport, is a port, major rail junction and a holiday resort because of its beaches, sanatoriums, mineral-water spas and semitropical climate.
