Bützow
Bützow is a town in the district of Rostock in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in north-eastern Germany, centered on Bützower See. History The town was first mentioned in 1171. From 1815 to 1918 Bützow was part of the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, from 1871 within the German Empire. From 1933 to 1945, during Nazi rule and World War II, a Nazi prison was operated in the Dreibergen district with multiple forced labour subcamps located in various places in the region. After the war, the town was part of East Germany until 1990. On 5 May 2015, the town was struck by an F3 tornado which caused severe damage to many buildings, including the local hospital. Culture Medieval Bützow Castle is located in Bützow. The town also has a medieval Brick Gothic church, which contains an altarpiece made by the Master of the Bützow Altarpiece (1503). Wenceslaus Johann Gustav Karsten
Wenceslaus Johann Gustav Karsten (15 December 1732 – 17 April 1787) was a German mathematician. In 1768, Karsten published a graphic representation of infinitely many logarithms of real and complex numbers. He was a professor of Mathematics at the Universities of Rostock, Bützow and Halle. Education and early life He was born Neubrandenburg but grew up with his grandfather in Güstrow where he attended high school. From 1750 he studied theology at the Universities in Rostock and Jena but also heard lectures on mathematics and philosophy. In 1754 he returned to Güstrow with the aim to become a priest. As he heard the University of Rostock was in need of a mathematician, he returned to the University of Rostock and also graduated in mathematics in February 1755. Sophie Charlotte Of Hesse-Kassel
Sophie Charlotte of Hesse-Kassel (16 July 1678, Kassel – 30 May 1749, Bützow) was a princess of Hesse-Kassel and by marriage Duchess of Mecklenburg. Life Sophie Charlotte was a daughter of Count Charles of Hesse-Kassel (1654 to 1730) from his marriage to Maria Amalia of Courland (1653 to 1711), daughter of Duke Jacob Kettler of Kurland. She married on 2 January 1704 in Kassel Duke Frederick William of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (1675–1713). They had no children. Frederick William probably suffered from a sexually transmitted disease. After the death of the Duke in 1713, Sophie Charlotte lived at Bützow Castle. Dietrich Ludwig Gustav Karsten (5 April 1768 – 20 May 1810) was a German mineralogist. Among the most notable of Karsten's writings is a mineralogy book published in 1789 when he was only 21 years old. Else Hirsch (29 July 1889 – 1942 or 1943) was a Jewish teacher in Bochum, Germany, and a member of the German Resistance against the Third Reich. She organized transports of Jewish children to the Netherlands and England, saving them from Nazi deportation to concentration camps and death. Hirsch perished in the Riga Ghetto, at the age of 53 or 54.
