Byeongpungdo
Byeongpungdo, or Byeongpung Island, or Pyeongpung is an uninhabited island in South Korea's Dadohaehaesang National Park, with an area of 0.56 square kilometers. It is located at the southern extremity of Jindo County, South Jeolla Province, in the administrative division of Donggeochado-ri, Jodo-myeon. The island is formed from Cretaceous-era volcanic rock of the Yucheon Group, part of the Gyeongsang System which underlies much of South Korea. Although there is some vegetation, including thick groves of bay trees, the central part of the island consists solely of bare rock, rising sharply to a height of 129.4 meters above the water. Byeongpungdo is home to ten species of rare birds, including the nationally endangered streaked shearwater and peregrine falcon. Sinking Of The MV Sewol
The ferry MV ''Sewol'' sank on the morning of April 16, 2014, en route from Incheon towards Jeju in South Korea. The 6,825-ton vessel sent a distress signal from about north of Byeongpungdo at 08:58 KST (23:58 UTC, April 15, 2014). Out of 476 passengers and crew, 306 died in the disaster, including around 250 students from Danwon High School ( Ansan City). Of the approximately 172 survivors, more than half were rescued by fishing boats and other commercial vessels that arrived at the scene approximately 40 minutes before the Korea Coast Guard (KCG). The sinking of ''Sewol'' resulted in widespread social and political reaction within South Korea. Many people criticized the actions of the ferry's captain and most of the crew. Streaked Shearwater
The streaked shearwater (''Calonectris leucomelas'') is a species of seabird. The adult bird averages in length, with a wingspan. Description The streaked shearwater feeds mainly on fish and squid. It follows fishing boats, attracted to anchovy crawls off Japan and has been known to be taken as by-catch in nets or drowned when ingesting the bait on long-line fishing lines. The streaked shearwater nests in burrows. It prefers forested hills. This bird is abundant and widespread; however, some mortality occurs through becoming entangled in fishing nets, and from some predation by cats and rats. Gyeongsang System
Gyeongsang ( ko, 경상도, ''Gyeongsang-do''; ) was one of the eight provinces of Korea during the Joseon dynasty. Gyeongsang was located in the southeast of Korea. The provincial capital was Daegu. The region was the birthplace of the Kingdom of Silla.
