''By the Rapids'' is Mohawk-language animated television show that originally aired on the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN) from 2008 to 2012. It was the first Indigenous animated television series in Canada. The series centers on Cory Littlehorn, a teenager whose family moves from the urban setting of Toronto to the small Native community where his parents grew up and the humor of day-to-day life in a small town. It was created by Joseph Lazare who drew from his experience of moving when he was a teenager from Kahnawake, a Mohawk reserve outside of Montreal, to Toronto. Lazare has stated that it was his intent to create a show that "was special to our community but wasn't neglecting people from the outside." Mohawk Language
Mohawk (; ''Kanienʼkéha'', " anguageof the Flint Place") is an Iroquoian language currently spoken by around 3,500 people of the Mohawk nation, located primarily in current or former Haudenosaunee territories, predominately Canada (southern Ontario and Quebec), and to a lesser extent in the United States (western and northern New York). The word "Mohawk" is an exonym. In the Mohawk language, the people say that they are from ''Kanien:ke'' ('Mohawk Country' or "Flint Stone Place") and that they are ''Kanienʼkehá꞉ka'' "People of the Flint Stone Place" or "People of the Flint Nation". The Mohawks were extremely wealthy traders, as other nations in their confederacy needed their flint for tool-making. The Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN, stylized aptn) is a Canadian specialty channel. Established in 1992 and maintained by governmental funding to broadcast in Canada's northern territories, APTN acquired a national broadcast licence in 1999. Joseph Tekaroniake Lazare (born June 19, 1984) is a Mohawk director, producer, writer and actor. He is a member of thWolf Clan Early life Lazare grew up in Kahnawake, a Mohawk reserve south of the Saint Lawrence River and across from Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He began filmmaking at 12 years old through Teioiaks, a local summertime film production program. After attending Kahnawake’s local high school, Lazare left a collegiate film and television production program to intern at Aboriginal owned and operated Big Soul Productions in Toronto, Ontario. The Mohawk people ( moh, Kanienʼkehá꞉ka) are the most easterly section of the Haudenosaunee, or Iroquois Confederacy.
