Buttons Kaluhiokalani
Montgomery Ernest Thomas Kaluhiokalani (March 30, 1958 – November 2, 2013) was a surfer from Hawaii, known as Buttons. He was an innovator of modern surfing maneuvers and was known for his switch foot surfing and for performing the first backside 360 in a major surf film. Surfer Magazine called him one of the most influential surfers of all time, and he has been described by ''Surfer Today'' as a "surf legend." Early life Born Montgomery Ernest Thomas Kaluhiokalani in Honolulu, his father was an army serviceman and his mother was a bartender. When he was five, his mother moved with him and his two brothers to Waikiki, where his grandmother gave him his nickname, saying that the tight curls of his hair looked like "buttons" attached to his head. Kapiolani Park
Queen Kapiolani Regional Park is the largest and second-oldest public park in Hawaii, located in Honolulu on the east end of Waikiki just beyond Kuhio Beach Park and the Waikiki residential neighborhood. The park, named after Queen Kapiolani, the queen consort of King David Kalākaua, is home to the Waikiki Shell and the Honolulu Zoo. History Kingdom of Hawaii In the 1870s, King Kalākaua was asked to find a permanent, dry course for horse racing. Since Waikiki was popular with wealthy racing fans, Kalākaua chose the unoccupied and dry plain at the foot of Diamond Head where the park now stands. O'Neill World Cup Of Surfing
The O'Neill World Cup of Surfing is a prestigious event in professional surfing held annually at Pūpūkea (Sunset Beach) on Oahu in Hawaii. The event attracts hundreds of elite surfers from around the world, and is known for its huge waves. It is the second tournament in the Triple Crown of Surfing. History The first competition was held in 1975. Of the 22 surfers who have won the event, 7 went on to become world champions. This competition is the final stop of the 2010 Association of Surfing Professional Tour, and the ASPW Tour as well.
