Butch Warren
Edward Rudolph "Butch" Warren Jr. (August 9, 1939 – October 5, 2013) was an American jazz bassist who was active during the 1950s and 1960s. Biography Warren's mother was a typist at the CIA. His father, Edward Sr., was an electronics technician who played piano and organ part-time in clubs in Washington, D.C; his uncle, Quentin — actually the same age as Butch — played guitar. The Warren home was often visited by jazz musicians Billy Hart, Jimmy Smith, and Stuff Smith. The first time Butch Warren played bass was at home on an instrument left by Billy Taylor, who had played bass for Duke Ellington. Warren has cited Jimmy Blanton, the innovative and virtuoso bassist with Ellington from 1939 to 1941, as his biggest inspiration. Joe Henderson
Joe Henderson (April 24, 1937 – June 30, 2001) was an American jazz tenor saxophonist. In a career spanning more than four decades, Henderson played with many of the leading American players of his day and recorded for several prominent labels, including Blue Note, Milestone, and Verve. Biography Early life Born in Lima, Ohio, United States, Henderson was one of fourteen children. He was encouraged by his parents Dennis and Irene (née Farley) and older brother James T. to study music. He dedicated his first album to them "for being so understanding and tolerant" during his formative years. Early musical interests included drums, piano, saxophone and composition. ''A Swingin' Affair'' is a 1962 album by saxophonist Dexter Gordon, recorded two days after ''Go (Dexter Gordon album), Go!'', and with the same line-up. Recording and music The album was recorded at Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, on August 29, 1962. Gordon's quartet contained pianist Sonny Clark, bassist Butch Warren, and drummer Billy Higgins. ''Una Mas'', titled ''Una Mas (One More Time)'' on the front cover, is a jazz album by trumpeter Kenny Dorham and his quintet, released in 1963 on Blue Note as BLP 4127 and BST 84127. The album would be the next-to-last studio session led by the trumpeter. ''Una Mas'' features three compositions by Dorham himself. An outtake from the session, the ballad "If Ever I Would Leave You", comes from the Broadway musical ''Camelot''. At the time, Dorham was still relatively unknown to the jazz audience, and spoke of his lack of musical fame to Nat Hentoff: Compositions "Una Mas" is a 16-bar tune pertaining to bossa nova genre. ''A New Perspective'' is a 1964 studio album by jazz trumpeter Donald Byrd. It was released on the Blue Note label as BLP 4124 and BST 84124. In 2017, it was ranked at number 194 on ''Pitchfork''s list of the "200 Best Albums of the 1960s". The album was remastered by Rudy Van Gelder in 1998. Silver Spring is a census-designated place (CDP) in southeastern Montgomery County, Maryland, United States, near Washington, D.C. ''Go!'' is a studio album by jazz musician Dexter Gordon featuring Sonny Clark, Butch Warren and Billy Higgins, recorded on August 27, 1962 and released in the same year on Blue Note. According to the liner notes by Ira Gitler, this session was "not recorded in a nightclub performance but, in its informal symmetry, it matches the relaxed atmosphere that the best of those made in that manner engender. Everyone was really together, in all the most positive meanings of that word." It was recorded by Rudy Van Gelder at the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs. Since its release, ''Go!'' has received very positive reviews from critics, with AllMusic giving it a five star rating.
