Business As Usual (Secret Affair Album)
''Business as Usual'' is the third album by mod revival band Secret Affair, released in January 1982 by their label I-Spy. The album peaked at number 84 on the UK Albums Chart. Background and release After the commercial disappointment of the band's previous album '' Behind Closed Doors'', Ian Page and David Cairns, whose relationship had strained during that album, decided to tour in America and Canada in March 1981. In the USA, they "could be taken at face value", unlike in the UK where they were "deemed to be merely the product of a youth cult". Drummer Seb Shelton had left the band in December 1980 to join Dexys Midnight Runners and was replaced by Paul Bultitude, whose cousin was the band's bassist Dennis Smith. Secret Affair
Secret Affair are a mod revival band, formed in 1978 and disbanded in 1982 during which period their work is predominantly best-known. They reformed in 2002 and have since then produced an album in 2012. Career Formed after the demise of the CBS Records signed power pop band New Hearts, singer Ian Page and guitarist David Cairns spent the second half of 1978 writing songs that would form the basis of the first two Secret Affair albums. After spending January 1979 demoing songs, Page and Cairns enlisted the services of bassist Dennis Smith from the power pop band Advertising and Young Bucks drummer Seb Shelton. Saxophone player Dave Winthrop, originally playing with the group in his capacity as a session musician, would join as a full-time member of the band later in the year. David Cairns (musician)
David Cairns (born 15 November 1958) is an English rock guitarist and songwriter, best known for his role in the band Secret Affair. The writer of the band's biggest hits, he was known for his intense guitar style. Background and early career The son of an Epping Forest GP, Dr Richard James Cairns MBE, David Cairns was first inspired to take up the guitar after an encounter at a local nightclub with BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel, who recommended the teenager listen to a Lynyrd Skynyrd album. He was also inspired by a live performance by The Who at Charlton Athletic's football ground in 1976 and while at sixth form teamed up with singer Ian Page, forming power pop/punk band New Hearts. Mod (subculture)
Mod, from the word modernist, is a subculture that began in London and spread throughout Great Britain and elsewhere, eventually influencing fashions and trends in other countries, and continues today on a smaller scale. Focused on music and fashion, the subculture has its roots in a small group of stylish London-based young men in the late 1950s who were termed ''modernists'' because they listened to modern jazz. ''Melody Maker'' was a British weekly music magazine, one of the world's earliest music weeklies; according to its publisher, IPC Media, the earliest. Paul Bultitude
Paul Bultitude is an English musician and record producer. He was the drummer in power pop band Advertising, working with his cousin Dennis Smith, Tot Taylor and Simon Boswell, before replacing Seb Shelton as the drummer in Secret Affair. He was responsible for "discovering" Mari Wilson and when she achieved chart success on Tot Taylor's Compact Records label, Bultitude was the drummer in her band, the Wilsations. He was also the drummer for the short-lived power pop band, The Innocents. Career In 1982 he formed the record label Dance Network with songwriter Paul Bevoir and together they set about crafting executed and packaged bubblegum pop, inspired by the music and merchandising of The Monkees and The Beatles. Dexys Midnight Runners (currently officially Dexys, their former nickname, styled without an apostrophe) are an English pop rock band from Birmingham, with soul influences, who achieved major commercial success in the early to mid-1980s. Ian Page (singer)
Ian Page (born 19 June 1960) is a British musician, gamebook author, and vocalist in the band Secret Affair. Career Teaming up with guitarist David Cairns while at school, Ian Page formed power pop/punk band New Hearts and signed to CBS Records in 1977, releasing two singles and touring with the Jam before the demise of the New Hearts in 1978. Continuing to work with Cairns and forming Secret Affair, the two songwriters spent the second half of 1978 writing songs that would form the basis of the first two Secret Affair albums. Page sang lead vocals in the group and is also credited as the band's trumpeter and keyboardist on the sleeve of their first album, ''Glory Boys''. In a period of a little over two years, the band posted five releases in the UK Singles Chart, and released three albums.
