Bushrod Johnson
Bushrod Rust Johnson (October 7, 1817 – September 12, 1880) was a Confederate general in the American Civil War and an officer in the United States Army. As a university professor he had been active in the state militias of Kentucky and Tennessee and on the outbreak of hostilities he sided with the South, despite having been born in the North in a family of abolitionist quakers. As a divisional commander he managed to evade capture at the Battle of Fort Donelson, but was wounded at the Battle of Shiloh. He served under Robert E. Lee throughout the 10-month Siege of Petersburg, and surrendered with him at Appomattox. Early life Johnson was born in Belmont County, Ohio. He was raised as a Quaker and, before moving to the South, worked on the Underground Railroad with his uncle. He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1840 and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the 3rd U.S. Infantry. Bushrod Washington (June 5, 1762 – November 26, 1829) was an American attorney and politician who served as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1798 to 1829. On the Supreme Court, he was a staunch ally of Chief Justice John Marshall. Washington was a co-founder and president of the American Colonization Society, which promoted the emigration of freed slaves to Africa. The nephew of American founding father and President George Washington, he inherited his uncle's papers and Mount Vernon, taking possession in 1802 after the death of Martha Washington, his uncle's widow, and with Marshall's help, published a biography of the first president. Bushrod Washington James, A.M., M.D. (1836–1903) was an American surgeon, homeopathy, homeopathist, writer, and philanthropist who lived in Philadelphia. He graduated from the Homeopathic College in 1857. He served as the secretary of the Homeopathic Medical Society of Pennsylvania and later as its president. He bequeathed US$55,000 as well as several properties in Philadelphia and Island Beach, New Jersey, to establish the Washington James Eye and Ear Institute, a free hospital for the treatment of diseases of the eyes, throat, and lungs. He also provided three houses, books, jewels, relics, and a US$40,000 endowment to establish a library for children and the elderly, which eventually became the Bushrod branch of the Free Library of Philadelphia. He donated land to the city of Oakland, California, for the establishment of Bushrod Park, and several plots of land to the city of Coronado, California, for the establishment of the Bushrod Washington James Institute. Bushrod Washington "Bush" Wilson (1824–1900) was a pioneer, business leader, and local politician in the American state of Oregon. He is best remembered as one of the pioneer first citizens of the town of Corvallis, Oregon, and as the founder of the Willamette Valley & Coast Railroad (WV&C), established in 1874. Jermon Terrell Bushrod (born August 19, 1984) is a former American football guard. He played college football for Towson UniversityTaft Coghill, Jr.,"Saints' Bushrod set to march into town," ''The Free Lance–Star'' (December 5, 2009). and was drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the fourth round of the 2007 NFL Draft. Bushrod Island is an island near Monrovia, Liberia surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the Saint Paul River, the Mesurado River and Stockton Creek (a tidal channel that connects the two rivers). The Bushrod neighborhood in North Oakland, Oakland, California is an area surrounding its namesake park, and bounded by Martin Luther King, Jr. Way to the west, Claremont Avenue to the east, Highway 24 to the south, and the Berkeley border to the north.
