Bury St Edmunds RUFC
Bury St Edmunds RUFC is a rugby union club based in Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk. Founded in 1925 as Bury and West Suffolk Rugby Football Club, the Men's 1st XV currently play in the fourth tier of the English league system, National League 2 East. The club has 4 senior Men's sides, and a women's side as well who play in the 3rd tier of the RFU system, Championship Midlands 2. History Bury St Edmunds RUFC played their first match as "Bury and West Suffolk Rugby Football Club" in 1925, with post-war practice taking place at Culford School. In 1974, seventeen members of the team were killed when Turkish Airlines Flight 981 crashed outside Paris. In 2001, the first team was promoted to London 3 North East, winning the league six years later to be promoted to London 2 North in 2007. Eastern Counties Rugby Football Union
The Eastern Counties Rugby Union (ECRU) is the governing body for the sport of rugby union in the counties of Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk in England. Clubs in the old Huntingdonshire and the Soke of Peterborough are affiliated to the East Midlands Rugby Football Union. The union is the constituent body of the Rugby Football Union (RFU) for those counties. The ECRU administers and organises rugby union clubs and competitions in those three counties and administers the Eastern Counties county rugby representative teams. History The Eastern Counties Rugby Union was founded in 1890 and originally organised rugby union in Essex, Suffolk and Norfolk. Bury Titans
Bury Titans are rugby league team based in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. They play in the East Division of the Rugby League Conference. History ''South Norfolk Saints'' joined the Eastern Division of the Rugby League Conference in 1998. In this inaugural season, they won their division and qualified for the grand final where they lost to Crawley Jets. South Norfolk Saints who took a year off from the Conference in the 2002 season and played in the London League instead. They re-joined the Eastern Division in 2003. West Suffolk Hospital
West Suffolk Hospital is a small district general hospital in Bury St Edmunds, England. It is managed by the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust. History The hospital was built in a former Ordnance Depot in Hospital Road in Bury St Edmunds. It was opened as the Bury and Suffolk General Hospital on 4 January 1825. It was extended in 1861 and balconies were added in 1908. It became the Suffolk General Hospital in 1902 and the West Suffolk General Hospital in 1929. After joining the National Health Service in 1948, it moved to Hardwick Lane in Bury St Edmunds in 1973. The hospital received extensive publicity when Myra Hindley, the Moors murderer, died there in November 2002. The Marquess of Bristol, whose former home was Ickworth House near Bury St Edmunds, opened a new Friends of the Hospital shop in June 2013. Eastern Counties 2 is an English level 10 Rugby Union League - currently divided into 3 regional divisions (north, south, west). Promoted teams move up to Eastern Counties 1 with teams in this league tending to be from Cambridgeshire, Norfolk or Suffolk. Currently a three divisions, Eastern Counties 2 has previously been divided into North and South divisions with teams from Essex taking part, and had relegation to Eastern Counties 3. In 2003-04 the Essex teams broke away, forming a new league - with Essex 2 being the equivalent division to Eastern Counties 2. Eastern Counties 1 is an English level 9 Rugby Union League. From the 2017-18 promoted teams move up to the newly created London 3 Eastern Counties with the league champions going up automatically, while relegated teams drop down to Eastern Counties 2 (split into three regional divisions - north, south, west). Teams in this league tend to be based in Cambridgeshire, Norfolk or Suffolk. In the past teams from Essex used to take part until the 2003–04 season when they formed a new league - with Essex 1 being the top division. Each year some of the 1st XV clubs in this division also take part in the RFU Junior Vase - a level 9-12 national competition. Regional 1 South East (up until 2022-23 known as London & South East Premier and up until 2016-17 known as National League 3 London & South East) is a level five league in the English rugby union system. It is one of six leagues at this level. When this division began in 1987 it was known as London Division 1. The format of the league was changed at the beginning of the 2009–10 season following re-organisation by the Rugby Football Union while the name change from National League 3 to Premier was introduced for the 2017–18 season to make it more obvious that it is a regional league. London & South East Premier is the highest regional rugby union league covering London and south east England. London 3 North East was an English rugby union league that was the eighth level of club rugby union in England and was available to sides from north east London, Essex, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk. Promoted clubs move into London 2 North East. Relegated teams tended to drop to Eastern Counties 1 or Essex 1 depending on geographical location, with new teams also coming from these leagues. The league was discontinued at the end of the 2016–17 season as the RFU decided to instead create two new leagues - London 3 Eastern Counties and London 3 Essex - to reduce travelling times for teams involved.
