English Language
English is a West Germanic language of the Indo-European language family, with its earliest forms spoken by the inhabitants of early medieval England. George Wyman Bury
G. Wyman Bury (3 January 1874 – 23 September 1920) was a naturalist, explorer, author, Arabist, and political officer in the British army. Born in Mancetter Manor House near the town of Atherstone, Bury was educated at Atherstone Grammar School and then by tutors ("Army crammers") who specialized in preparing students for the examinations that were part of Army Officer Selection. In 1894 he received a commission in the 3rd Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment. In 1895 Bury joined one of the rebel tribes in southern Morocco. In 1896 in the Aden littoral desert, he worked in archaeology and natural history, as well as intelligence gathering among the mountain tribes of Aden. From 1897 to 1901 he explored in the Rub' al Khali. In 1902 he was with the Aden Boundary Commission. In 1903–1904 he was engaged as a political officer in military operations in the Aden Protectorate. Thomas Talbot Bury
Thomas Talbot Bury (26 November 1809 – 23 February 1877) was a British architect and lithographer. There seems to be some dispute about Bury's date of birth. According to Grace's Guide, the 1877 Institution of Civil Engineers Obituaries gives a DOB as 26th of September 1811, the Directory of British Architects 1834-1914 Vol.1 and the Library of Congress agree. The Royal Academy gives a date of simply 1809 and the Science Museum agrees with them. Bury was articled to Augustus Charles Pugin in 1824 and started his own practice in Soho in 1830. At various times he collaborated with other notable architects including Charles Lee ( partners between 1845 and 1849), Lewis Vulliamy and A. W. N. Pugin, with whom he detailed the Houses of Parliament under Sir Charles Barry. Bury's works included thirty-five churches and chapels, fifteen parsonages, twelve schools and twenty other large public buildings and private homes. Thomas Bury (judge)
Thomas Bury (1655–1722) was an English judge. He took part in the decision regarding the 1704 Aylesbury election. King George I raised Bury to the position of Chief Baron of the Exchequer. Early life and education Bury was born in 1655, the youngest son of Sir William Bury, knight, of Linwood, Lincolnshire. In February 1667, Bury earned a bachelor's degree at Lincoln College, Oxford, and entered Gray's Inn as a student the following year. Career He was called to the bar in 1676, and after some years' practice became a serjeant-at-law in 1700. Priscilla Susan Bury, born Falkner (12 January 1799 Liverpool – 8 March 1872 Croydon), was an English botanist and illustrator. Personal life Priscilla Susan Bury was born in Rainhill, Liverpool. Her parents were Edward Falkner and Bridget (née Tarleton) Falkner. Bury grew up in Lancashire, England and was the daughter of a rich Liverpool merchant whose estate resided outside the city at Fairfields. Bury’s childhood home contained a lush garden with many rare and exotic plants. Growing up, Bury drew each plant species that held her interest and claimed that she was "raised in the greenhouses of her family home” which was later demolished in 1913. As a young woman she was an enthusiastic botanist and flower painter and was particularly interested in lilies and similar allied flowers. Oliver Robert Hawke Bury
Oliver Robert Hawke Bury (3 November 1861 – 21 March 1946) was an English railway engineer, chief mechanical engineer on the Great Western Railway of Brazil, General Manager of the Great Northern Railway in England and Director of the London and North Eastern Railway. Bury, the son of a barrister, was born in London and educated at Westminster School. The first manager of the Great Northern Railway in 1847 had been his great-uncle. In 1879 he was apprenticed to William Adams, locomotive engineer on the London and South Western Railway. Leslie Harry Ernest Bury CMG (25 February 1913 – 7 September 1986) was an Australian politician and economist. He was a member of the Liberal Party and served in the House of Representatives between 1956 and 1974, representing the Division of Wentworth. Judson Sykes Bury (1852–1944) was a British physician, surgeon, and neurologist. Biography After education at Amersham Hall and then two years at Owens College, Manchester, Judson Bury entered University College London and studied medicine at University College Hospital, London. In 1877 he qualified MRCS and graduated MB (Lond.). After holding house appointments at University College Hospital, he graduated MD (Lond.) in 1879. He returned to Manchester and, after one year as a senior resident medical officer at the Manchester Children's Hospital, Pendlebury, engaged in general practice. At the Manchester Royal Infirmary he became in 1885 a registrar, in 1889 an assistant physician, and in 1899 a full physician. In 1911 he became a professor of clinical at the University of Manchester.
