Burwood is a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 14 km east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the Cities of Monash and Whitehorse local government areas. Burwood recorded a population of 15,147 at the 2021 census. History The first settlement in the area, known as Ballyshanassy, was surveyed in 1858. The settlement changed name to Norwood and subsequently Burwood in 1879. The Post Office opened on 1 May 1853 as Ballyshanassy and was renamed Burwood around June 1879. The name "Burwood" (later "Invergowrie") was the name of a house built by Sir James Palmer, in Hawthorn West, in 1852. The original settlement was centred near Burwood Cemetery and the Police Station, but the focus shifted to the intersection of Warrigal Road and Toorak Road, with later commercial development. Burwood railway station is located on the Alamein line in Victoria, Australia. It serves the eastern Melbourne suburb of Glen Iris, and opened on 30 May 1890 as Hartwell. It was renamed Burwood on 1 August 1909. History Burwood station opened on 30 May 1890 and, like the suburb itself, was named after ''Burwood House'', built by Sir James Frederick Palmer in 1852. Burwood was on the second section of the Outer Circle line. From May 1897 until July 1898, the station became disused following the closure of the line. However, after a public outcry, the line and the station were reopened, being served by what became known as the ''Deepdene Dasher'', a train consisting of one or two "American-style" carriages hauled by a steam locomotive. In 1924, the line was electrified to the terminus at Ashburton. On 28 June 1948, the line was extended to Alamein, becoming the present-day Alamein line. The electoral district of Burwood was an electorate for the Victorian Legislative Assembly in Australia. It was located approximately 13 kilometres east of Melbourne, and covered an area of 25 km2. The seat included the suburbs of Ashburton, Ashwood, Box Hill South, Burwood, Chadstone, and parts of Camberwell, Canterbury, Glen Iris, and Surrey Hills. It was created in 1955 as part of the expansion of the Legislative Assembly, and abolished in 1967, replaced by Glen Iris. Burwood was recreated in 1976, replacing Glen Iris. The seat's most notable member was Jeff Kennett, who won the seat on its recreation in 1976 and went on to serve as leader of the Liberal Party from 1982 to 1989 and from 1991 to 1999, and as Premier of Victoria from 1992 to 1999. Kennett retired after his government's shock defeat at the 1999 election. Burwood railway station is a heritage-listed railway station located on the Main Suburban line in the Sydney suburb of Burwood in the Municipality of Burwood local government area of New South Wales, Australia. The station is served by Sydney Trains T9 Northern line and T2 Inner West & Leppington line services. History Burwood Parramatta Road was first created in 1791, a vital land (cf water) artery between Sydney Cove and Rose Hill's settlement and crops. Liverpool Road opened in 1814 as Governor Macquarie's Great South Road. Its winding route reflects pre-existing land grant boundaries.
