Burton (steamboat)
''Burton'' was a steamboat built in 1905 in Tacoma, Washington and which was in service on Puget Sound until 1924. Career ''Burton'' was built for the Tacoma and Burton Navigation Company, whose principals had once been partners with the owners of a rival steamer ''Norwood'' on runs from Tacoma to points on Vashon Island. ''Burton'' was intended to compete with ''Norwood''. Once ''Burton'' was completed, daily competition for fares meant both steamers were racing each other from landing to landing. ''Norwood'' was soon replaced with the faster and newer ''Vashon'', and the racing continued with ''Burton'' every day until 1907, when ''Burton'' was replaced on the route by ''Magnolia''. ''Burton'' was sold to the Kitsap County Transportation Company (KCTC) in 1912. Kitsap County Transportation Company
The Kitsap County Transportation Company was an important steamboat and ferry company that operated on Puget Sound. The company was founded in 1898 as the Hansen Transportation Company. Hansen Transportation The Kitsap County Transportation Company grew out of a business known as the Hansen Transportation Company. The founder of Hansen Transportation was Capt J.J. Hansen who moved to Tacoma from Minnesota in 1888. In Minnesota, and later in Boxton, North Dakota, J.J. Hansen had been in the business of selling farm equipment. J.J. Hansen had two sons who joined him in the steamboat business, Captains Henry A. Hansen and Ole L. Hansen (1875–1940), as well as a son-in-law, Capt. Alf Hostmark. Vashon is a census-designated place (CDP) in King County, Washington, United States. ''Magnolia'' was a wooden-hulled steamship that operated on Puget Sound from 1907 to 1937. Career ''Magnolia'' was built at Tacoma in 1907 for the Tacoma and Burton Navigation Company, which intended her to replace ''Burton'' on the company's routes around Tacoma and Vashon Island. The company's chief rival was the Vashon Navigation Company, which ran the steamer ''Vashon'', under Captain Chauncey "Chance" Wyman. Once launched, ''Magnolia'', under Capt. Gig Harbor is the name of both a bay on Puget Sound and a city on its shore in Pierce County, Washington,. The population was 12,029 at the 2020 census. Gig Harbor is one of several cities and towns that claim to be "the gateway to the Olympic Peninsula".
