The Burton-on-Trent Open also called the Burton-on-Trent Open Tennis Tournament was a men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in August 1883. It was first staged at the Ind Coope Ground at Burton upon Trent, East Staffordshire, England and ran till 1905 when it was abolished. The gentlemen's singles competed for the Ratcliff Challenge Cup. In 1884 there was two editions of this tournament one in the spring won by Frank Seymour Noon and the other in the summer won by Walter Chamberlain. Burton upon Trent, also known as Burton-on-Trent or simply Burton, is a market town in the borough of East Staffordshire in the county of Staffordshire, England, close to the border with Derbyshire. Charles Gladstone Allen
Charles Gladstone Allen (1868 – 1924) was a British tennis player in the early years of Wimbledon. He was an all comers finalist at 1896 Wimbledon Championships in men's doubles event partnering with his brother Roy Allen, where the lost to Reginald Doherty and Harold Nisbet. He was active from 1887 to 1914 and contested 17 career finals in singles and won 8 titles. Career Charles played his first event at the 1887 Stevenage LTC Tournament where he reached the quarter-finals. In 1890 he won his first singles title in Saxmundham LTC Tournament (later known as the Suffolk Championships) against his brother Roy Allen. Ind Coope
Allied Breweries was the result of a 1961 merger between Ind Coope (of Burton), Ansells (of Birmingham), and Tetley Walker (of Leeds). In 1978, Allied Breweries merged with the food and catering group J. Lyons and Co to form Allied Lyons. The breweries business merged with Carlsberg in 1992 and became Carlsberg-Tetley, which is now part of Carlsberg Group, with Carlsberg-Tetley now known as Carlsberg UK. Alice Pickering
Alice Pickering (1860 – 18 February 1939; née ''Alice Mabel Simpson'') was an English tennis player. Pickering played at the Wimbledon Championships from 1895 to 1901. Violet Pinckney
Violet Millicent Pinckney (11 March 1871 – 13 March 1955) was an English tennis player. Pinckney was born at Alderbury, Wiltshire, in 1871 to Major (rank), Major William Pinckney and his wife ''Frances Charlotte Everett''. In 1903 she won the German Open (WTA), German Championships. She took part in the 1908 Summer Olympics, but lost in the initial round to Gladys Eastlake-Smith. In 1907 and 1908 she won the ''London Championships''. She competed in 12 editions of the Wimbledon Championships between 1903 and 1925. Her best result in the singles event was reaching the quarterfinal in 1906, 1908 and 1920 while in doubles she reached the semifinal in 1914 partnering Marguerite Broquedis. Hilda Lane
Hilda Lane (1877 – 17 December 1916) was an English tennis player active during the first decade and a half of the 20th century. Career Between 1902 and 1914 she participated in the single event of the Wimbledon Championships and achieved her best result in her first appearance in 1902 when she reached the quarterfinal in which eventual champions Muriel Robb beat her in straight sets. In 1914 she also competed in the doubles event with Madeline O'Neill but lost in the first round. In 1902 she won the all-comer's tournament at the Kent Championships after her opponent Edith Greville retired at one set all but subsequently lost the challenge round match against Dorothea Douglass. The challenge round match was postponed from 14 June to 5 July due to rain. Sydney Howard Smith
Sydney Howard Smith (3 February 1872 – 27 March 1947) was a British tennis and badminton player. Career Sydney Smith was the first All England Badminton Men's Singles champion in 1900. He reached his first Wimbledon singles final in 1899, beating Herbert Roper Barrett in an epic five set semi final before losing the all comers final to Arthur Gore in four sets. In 1900 Smith beat Gore in the all comers final at Wimbledon, before losing to Reginald Doherty in the challenge round in four sets. In 1905, Smith beat Holcombe Ward, Wilberforce Eaves, William Larned and Major Ritchie before losing the all comers final in five sets to Norman Brookes. East Staffordshire is a local government district with borough status in Staffordshire in England. It has two main towns: Burton upon Trent and Uttoxeter.
