Burscheid
Burscheid is a town in the Rheinisch-Bergischer district, in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The town is known for its sub-communities (somewhat equivalent to the American concept of neighborhoods) and the town centre with its marketplace and churches. Economy The two largest employers in Burscheid are Federal Mogul GmbH (formerly known as Goetze AG) and Johnson Controls. Government The current mayor is Stefan Caplan (CDU), first elected in 2014 and re-elected in September 2020. Paul Luchtenberg
Paul Luchtenberg (1890–1973) was a German cultural scientist, educator and politician for the Free Democratic Party, as well as Culture Minister for North Rhine-Westphalia. Career Paul Luchtenberg was born 3 June 1980 in Burscheid and attended school in Gummersbach. He graduated in 1912 and went on to study philosophy and education at the University of Bonn and the University of Münster. During his studies he was a member of AMV Makaria Bonn, a student music society. After completing a PhD in Philosophy under Erich Becher, he began a probation year, teaching in a grammar school. He went on to teach in Remscheid until 1923. In addition, he qualified to be a professor at the University of Cologne in 1920, where he was a student of Max Scheler, whose material value-ethics he wanted to apply in his teaching. Günter Wallraff (born 1 October 1942) is a German writer and undercover journalist. Research methods Wallraff came to prominence thanks to his striking journalistic research methods and several major books on lower class working conditions and tabloid journalism. This style of research is based on what the reporter experiences personally after covertly becoming part of the subgroup under investigation. Wallraff would construct a fictional identity so that he was not recognisable as a journalist. Undercover work Wallraff invoked his constitutional right of conscientious objection to conscription in Germany into armed military service, thus being required to carry out alternative civilian service. Having missed the deadline for filing his refusal, he was nevertheless drafted into the ''Bundeswehr''. Carl Pulfrich
Carl P. Pulfrich (September 24, 1858 in Burscheid, Rhine Province – August 12, 1927 in Baltic Sea, drowned when his canoe capsized) was a German physicist, noted for advancements in optics made as a researcher for the Carl Zeiss company in Jena around 1880, and for documenting the Pulfrich effect, a psycho-optical phenomenon that can be used to create a type of 3-D visual effect. Carl Pulfrich was the brother-in-law of Heinrich Hertz. Advances in optics Pulfrich was employed to develop stereoscopy from being pure entertainment to a powerful quantitative technique. His apparatus to measure distances stereoscopically was first presented in Munich in 1899. This was further developed to a stereo-comparator which was presented in Hamburg in 1901. Rheinisch-Bergischer Kreis
The Rheinisch-Bergische Kreis is a Kreis (district) in the Cologne Bonn Region of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Neighboring districts are Kreis Mettman, Oberbergischer Kreis and Rhein-Sieg, and the district-free cities Cologne, Leverkusen, Solingen and Remscheid. History The area of the ''Bergisches Land'' belonged to the earldom Berg for most of medieval times, and still gives the district its name.
