Burroughs School (Conway, South Carolina)
Burroughs School, also known as Burroughs Graded School, is a historic school located at Conway in Horry County, South Carolina. It was built in three phases between 1905 and 1923. The earliest portion of the building was built as an elementary school and has three main portions of eleven bays. It features a one-story, hip roof porch supported by six Ionic order columns with Scamozzi capitals. About 1915 a two-story hipped classroom wing was added and in 1923 four classrooms and an auditorium was added to the complex. In 2014 the Horry County Museum moved into the renovated building from its former location in the historic Conway Post Office building. Conway, South Carolina
Conway is a city in and the county seat of Horry County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 24,849 at the 2020 census, up from 17,103 in the 2010 census, making it the 18th-most populous city in the state. The city is part of the Myrtle Beach metropolitan area. It is the home of Coastal Carolina University. Numerous buildings and structures located in Conway are on the National Register of Historic Places. Among these is the City Hall building, designed by Robert Mills, architect of the Washington Monument. Since the completion of the Main Street USA project in the 1980s, Conway's downtown has been revitalized with shops and bistros. Highlighting the renovation of the downtown area is the Riverwalk, an area of restaurants which follows a stretch of the Waccamaw River that winds through Conway. Horry County ( ) is the easternmost county in the U.S. state of South Carolina. As of the 2020 census, its population was 351,029. It is the fourth-most populous county in South Carolina. The Ionic order is one of the three canonic classical order, orders of classical architecture, the other two being the Doric order, Doric and the Corinthian order, Corinthian. There are two lesser orders: the Tuscan order, Tuscan (a plainer Doric), and the rich variant of Corinthian called the composite order. Vincenzo Scamozzi (2 September 1548 – 7 August 1616) was an Italians, Italian architect and a writer on architecture, active mainly in Vicenza and Republic of Venice area in the second half of the 16th century. He was perhaps the most important figure there between Andrea Palladio, whose unfinished projects he inherited at Palladio's death in 1580, and Baldassarre Longhena, Scamozzi's only pupil. United States Post Office (Conway, South Carolina)
Conway Post Office is a historic post office building located at Conway in Horry County, South Carolina. It was designed and built 1935–1936, and is one of a number of post offices in South Carolina designed by the Office of the Supervising Architect of the Treasury Department under Louis A. Simon. The building is in the Classical Revival style and is a one-story brick building that features an off-center entrance with large fanlight above. It was the first Federal post office built in the city of Conway until it was replaced by a new federal post office in 1977. In 1981, the renovated building was reopened as the Horry County Museum, which in 2014 moved to a new location in the Burroughs School.
