''Burning Gold'' is a 1936 American drama film directed by Sam Newfield and starring William Boyd (actor), William Boyd, Judith Allen and Lloyd Ingraham.Pitts p.49 It is a modern-day western film, western about a World War I veteran who becomes a wildcat prospector for oil and enjoys a major strike. The film's sets were designed by art director Lewis J. Rachmil. It was made as a B movie by the Poverty Row company Winchester Productions and was distributed by Republic Pictures in the US and British Lion Film Corporation, British Lion in the United Kingdom. Famed in his Western role of Hopalong Cassidy, Bill Boyd appeared in three 1936 films of non Western genre for Winchester Productions, all produced by George A. Sam Newfield
Sam Newfield, born Samuel Neufeld, (December 6, 1899 - November 10, 1964), also known as Sherman Scott or Peter Stewart, was an American B-movie director, one of the most prolific in American film history—he is credited with directing over 250 feature films in a career which began during the silent era and ended in 1958. In addition to his staggering feature output, he also directed one -and two-reel comedy shorts, training films, industrial films, TV episodes and pretty much anything anyone would pay him for. Because of this massive output—he would sometimes direct more than 20 films in a single year—he has been called the most prolific director of the sound era. Poverty Row
Poverty Row is a slang term used to refer to Hollywood films produced from the 1920s to the 1950s by small (and mostly short-lived) B movie studios. Although many of them were based on (or near) today's Gower Street in Hollywood, the term did not necessarily refer to any specific physical location, but was rather a figurative catch-all for low-budget films produced by these lower-tier studios. Many of the films of Poverty Row were Westerns, including series such as ''Billy the Kid'', starring Buster Crabbe, from Producers Releasing Corporation (PRC), comedy/adventure series such as those featuring the Bowery Boys (Monogram Pictures) and detectives such as The Shadow. Dennis O'Keefe (born Edward Vanes Flanagan, Jr., March 29, 1908 – August 31, 1968) was an American actor and writer. Early years Born in Fort Madison, Iowa, O'Keefe was the son of Edward Flanagan and Charlotte Flanagan, Irish vaudevillians working in the United States. As a small child, he joined his parents' act and later wrote skits for the stage. He attended the University of Southern California but left midway through his sophomore year after his father died. Career O'Keefe continued his father's vaudeville act for several years after the father's death. He started in films as an extra in 1931 and appeared in numerous films under the name Bud Flanagan. Frank Lorimer Mayo (June 28, 1889 – July 9, 1963) was an American actor. He appeared in 310 films between 1911 and 1949. Biography He was born in New York City, the son of actor Frank M. Mayo, and he died in Laguna Beach, California, from a heart attack. He was married to actress Dagmar Godowsky from 1921 to 1926. ''Go-Get-'Em, Haines'' is a 1936 American mystery film directed by Sam Newfield. It was William Boyd (actor), William Boyd's last non-Hopalong Cassidy role. Plot Ace reporter Steve Haines is on the trail of Edward Baldwin, the former head of a public utilities company that has bankrupted and defrauded its investors out of their life savings. Haines trails Baldwin to an ocean liner where he is planning to flee to Europe. During the voyage Haines is impressed by the company on the ship, including a famous actor and his singing daughter and a gangster. Haines organises a pantomime melodrama to entertain the passengers using his new acquaintances and convinces Baldwin to take a role playing a man who is murdered. Prior to going on the stage the fake revolver is replaced with a real one.
