James Burnie
James Burnie MC (10 May 1882 – 15 May 1975) was an English businessman and Liberal Party politician. Family and education Burnie was born in Bootle, Lancashire, the son of Joseph Burnie, a local businessman. He was educated at St John's School, Bootle and at Merchant Taylors' School, Crosby. In 1910, he married Ruth E. Thornton. The couple had a son and a daughter together. The marriage lasted until his wife died in 1939.''Who was Who'', OUP 2007 Career Burnie went into his father's business, eventually becoming Director of Bell & Burnie Ltd, specialists in cold store insulation. At the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, Burnie was mobilised as a Sergeant. He retired as a Major in Bootle Battalion, 7th King's Liverpool Regiment, having gained the Military Cross in 1918. He retained his commission after the war and retired from the Territorial Army Reserve of Officers upon reaching the age of fifty. Robert Burnie
Robert John Dickson Burnie (8 April 1842 – 6 March 1908) was a Liberal politician who served as MP for the Swansea Town constituency from 1892 to 1895. He was regarded as being on the radical wing of the party and was popular with working-class electors. Defeated by Sir John Llewelyn in 1895 he was rejected as a candidate for the constituency in 1900 due to his opposition to the South African War. Early life Burnie was born in 1842 at Dawlish in South Devon where his father, John Dickson Burnie, was a builder and contractor. The family came originally from Dumfriesshire. As a young man, Burnie worked in the railway trade and came to Swansea in 1870 when Shacklefgord, Ford & Co., the works at Cheltenham, where he was general manager, were re-located. He became general manager of the firm in 1876. Public life Burnie was elected to the Sweansea Town Council in 1877 and became active in the municipal life of the town, serving as Mayor and Chairman of the Harbour Trust. In 188 ... Stuart Burnie is a retired professional ice hockey player, most notably with the Springfield Indians of the American Hockey League. History College career Burnie played his college hockey with the Broncos of Western Michigan University. He received All-Academic honorable mention citations in 1985 and 1986. His collegiate career culminated with the team's first appearance in the NCAA hockey playoffs, in 1986; Burnie broke the school record for goals in a season and for a single game that season, as well as being named to the CCHA All-Tournament and Second Team All-Star teams. He finished his college career as the Broncos' second all-time goal scorer (behind teammate and future NHLer Dan Dorion) and seventh all-time point getter. Professional career Undrafted by any NHL team, Burnie signed a three-year minor league contract with the New York Islanders to play for their Springfield Indians farm team, and played the 1986, 1988 and 1989 seasons in Springfield.
